Save the date! Record Store Day 2014: Saturday April 19th. New Arrivals for February 11th .................................................. Band of Horses - Acoustic at the Ryman (Brown) A 10-song set of acoustic renditions of songs from across the BOH catalog, recorded at Nashville's legendary Ryman Auditorium over two magical nights in April 2013. Having captured this two-night stand's worth of singular performances that the Nashville Scene said "brought to mind the best efforts of Eagles and Crosby, Stills and Nash," Band of Horses set about translating the energy and electricity of The Ryman document into the closest possible experience to having been there. Free koozie w/ purchase! Blondfire - Young Heart (Tender Rush) Blondfire is Erica Driscoll and her brother Bruce. The two have been playing together since they were kids growing up in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Blondfire's new album channels the irresistible synth-pop feel of British new wave bands like Depeche Mode, New Order, OMD and Pet Shop Boys as well as the larger-than-life arena-rock ambitions of U2, Coldplay and even Arcade Fire. Camper Van Beethoven - Key Lime Pie [reissue] (Omnivore) CVB signed with Virgin Records in 1988 and delivered a record that defied those who thought the band might 'sell out.' The band returned the following year with what most deem their masterpiece Key Lime Pie. Once again produced by Dennis Herring, it continued the journey, but with higher production value and sound than had been heard before. From a track about Jack Ruby to a cover of Status Quo's 'Pictures Of Matchstick Men', Key Lime Pie was a slice above the rest and a fitting dessert for the 80s. Featuring 9 bonus tracks on the CD. Its both sweet & tart, and an essential component to any musical meal. Kim Deal - Solo Series 7" 1-3 (Period) THREE new 7"s from Ms Kim Deal! Walking With A Killer b/w Dirty Hessians. Hot Shot b/w Likkle More. Are You Mine? b/w Wish I Was. M Ward plays guitar on Wish I Was. All tracks written by Kim Deal and recorded All Wave. These are self-released and purchased direct! Buy now or cry later... Robert Ellis - The Lights from The Chemical Plant (New West) Produced by Jacquire King (Tom Waits, Kings Of Leon), Robert Ellis's 2nd album continues his journey into folk music he began 3 years ago. The songs on the new album, which range from the majestic string-adorned title track to noir pop rock and somber confessionals, both show Ellis' growth and the various sides of this multidimensional songwriter. Ellis recently told Rolling Stone The Lights From The Chemical Plant is "stylistically ambiguous," as he is inspired by a wide variety of artists. Fanfarlo - Let's Go Extinct (Blue Horizon) Fanfarlo do it with ease, and the folky elements blend nicely with the contemporary production sounds on all of their releases, but maybe best yet on this new record. Now a five-piece, the band stretch out nicely here, such as on "Cell Song" (with its hints of Robert Plant's "Big Log") or the album's closer, the title cut, "Let's Go Extinct." Others throb with New Wave quirkiness, such as "A Distance," which betrays the sound of '80s NYC with an Arthur Russell minimalist disco-vibe married to a David Byrne-esque vocal (and a nice retro sax tag to boot!). All in all, it is a great record to go exploring in, with themes that express a wide scope, from cellular beginnings to extinct futures. Neil Finn - Dizzy Heights (Lester) Third solo album from the beloved New Zealand-based singer best known for his work with Crowded House and Split Enz. Finn recorded the album at his own Roundhead Studio in Auckland and in Upstate New York. It was co-produced with Dave Fridmann (MGMT, Tame Impala, Flaming Lips). "I didn't want to make it a solo record in a stripped back singer-songwriter sort of way," Finn says. "I had a feeling Dave would be good at adding some odd shapes to the music, which I always welcome - making things a little more expansive. He is good at subverting things, and making things sound a bit messed up and not as obvious, rather than being too tasteful, which is always a temptation." Glitch Mob - Love Death Immortality (Glass Air) The Glitch Mob - the LA-based trio comprising Justin Boreta, Ed Ma, and Joshua Mayer - continues their forward movement into 2014. Boreta, edIT, and Ooah came together around 2006, passing through various members until settling on this core trio of musicians. Together, they combined their different skills and aesthetics into the compellingly collage whole that has become one of the most beloved live electronic acts working today. Hurray for the Riff Raff - Small Town Heroes (ATO) The album features frontwoman Alynda Lee Segarra - who settled in New Orleans after leaving her native Bronx at age 17- with twelve new, original songs all written or co-written by Segarra, with support from a vivid cast of Crescent City musicians. NPR has said that Hurray for the Riff Raff 'sweeps across eras and genres with grace and grit,' never more so than on 'Small Town Heroes.' Jamestown Revival - Utah (Wild Bunch) Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance grew up together in the small Texas town of Magnolia. About an hour north, there was some old family land with a dilapidated ranch house where they spent the better part of their adolescence. At one point or another, music from Creedence Clearwater and Everly Bros, to Willie Nelson, Guy Clark, and Stevie Ray Vaughan found its way through an old pair of speakers that sat on the back porch. Deeply rooted in harmony, they merged the sounds of the South with classic American, and Western rock. Their debut is heavily autobiographical, telling the stories of their adventures, their discomforts, and their observations. Modern Baseball - You're Gonna Miss It All (Run for Cover) Philadelphia's Modern Baseball are a uniquely contemporary band. Their quirky, tuneful songs convey how it feels to be young and hopeless in modern America-a cracked cellphone clutched in one's hand, subconsciously refreshing social media, hoping to get noticed by that girl at the party and ignored by the ghosts from high school past. Calling on Say Anything's bravado, the Front Bottoms' tongue-in-cheek quirk and the Weakerthans' literary misery, Modern Baseball have made a record with remarkable depth and relate-ability. Sam Roberts Band - Lo-Fantasy (Paper Bag) Producer Youth infuses Sam Roberts Band's rousing brand of rock n' roll with elements of funk, house, electronic, and African music, resulting in their most dynamic and inventive album to date. The combination of sleep deprivation, excitement, uncertainty, and adrenaline pushed the band outside any notion of comfort. Through it all, Sam's lyrics grapple with questions of identity and self-discovery in the modern age. The Sands - Hotel and Casino (Houseplant/Let's Pretend/Burger) Bloomington's The Sands draw from varied influences to create their own blend of hard rock power pop. Three of the members first came together on Halloween to form a Wipers tribute band, and have built on that cornerstone of punk and psychedelia to try and push the genres into a different direction. Songwriters Jason Groth and Jeff Grant fuse their disparate but parallel lineage here, Jason having spent years in Magnolia Electric Co and fronting his own manic group The Coke Dares, while Jeff cut his teeth fronting pop-punkers Pink Razors. With near-constant harmonies and big hooks, The Sands emerge fully-formed with "Hotel and Casino" (also featuring the rhythm section of Mike Bridavsky and Josh Morrow) while still leaving space to grow. Sun Kil Moon - Benji (Caldo Verde) Benji, Sun Kil Moon’s latest release was recorded between March and August 2012. Sun Kil Moon, led by Mark Kozelek is a reflection on Mark’s childhood years and his life today. Mark is joined by guest musicians Steve Shelley, Jen Wood, Will Oldham and Owen Ashworth. CD only til "later this year". Thumpers - Galore (Sub Pop) The London-based band duo create colorful, exuberant alt-pop that celebrates their innate musical kinship and drawsupon their shared childhood memories. Layered androgynous vocals are backed by muscular drums, astral synths and shimmering guitars in a celebration of the breathless sensations of youth and coming of age. Tinariwen - Emmaar (Anti) For Saharan blues band Tinariwen, the desert is home; their hypnotic and electrifying guitar rock reflects the melding of their Tuareg musical heritage with modern urban blues. Their 2011 album Tassili, recorded in the Algerian desert, won a Grammy Award for Best World Music album. Now their new record Emmaar returns to their roots, delivering stripped-down dirges and effervescent electric anthems. Tape & Vinyl & Print Zone ..................................................
