Save the date! Record Store Day 2014: Saturday April 19th. New Arrivals for February 18th .................................................. VA - Radio Ready - Lost Power Pop Hits 1979-83: Texas, Vol 1 LP (Cheap Rewards) A new regional compilation series that features lost power pop gems from the 1978-83 era. This first installment focuses on groups from Texas and spans Houston, Austin, Dallas, and even Amarillo! These 13 "shoulda been" hits were culled from hard to find singles and unreleased demos. Fully authorized by all the bands and expertly mastered from original source materials, these songs have never sounded better. Some of them are being presented on vinyl for the very first time. Stunning cover art and deluxe gatefold packaging with extensive liner notes gives these long overlooked bands a second chance to be discovered. Includes download card. Angel Olsen - Burn Your Fire For No Witness (Jagjaguwar) On her newest LP, Burn Your Fire for No Witness, Angel Olsen sings with full-throated exultation, admonition, and bold, expressive melody. With the help of producer John Congleton, her music now crackles with a churning, rumbling low end and a brighter energy. Angel began singing as a young girl in St. Louis. Her self-released debut EP, Strange Cacti, belied both that early period of discovery and her Midwestern roots. Free 7" with purchase while they last! Playing live at The Bishop on May 5th! Phantogram - Voices (Universal) Phantogram plays spiky, dense and danceable pop-rock songs with an electronic pulse: Most of its songs have an insistent grind to them, with a percussive through-line snapping and jabbing and infusing virtually every moment with jumpy urgency. Voices is the sound of a band at ease and assured in its moment, as it seizes every scrap of momentum it's created for itself. Guided by Voices - Motivational Jumpsuit (GBV) The latest, bestest release by reunited juggernaut Guided By Voices. It speaks in several silvery tongues, and like last year's English Little League takes many routes to the same shimmery, elusive destination: rock greatness. Its 20 songs (in 38 mins!) range from the shaggy, Who Sell Out pop-pourri of "Evangeline Dandelion" to the lurching, rifferific "Planet Score," breezing briskly through every worthwhile rock 'n' roll style sheet along the way. Pollard and co.'s influences are by now so thoroughly assimilated that GbV referents are mostly to other Guided By Voices songs / eras: "Save the Company" calls to mind the band's Bee Thousand / Alien Lanes lo-fi glory daze, while "Vote for Me Dummy" could be from Isolation Drills. Lost In The Trees - Past Life (Anti) When Lost In The Trees set out to record Past Life, they knew they needed a break with the past. On their first two releases, they had used an expanded six-member band to render carefully composed, classical-inflected songs. For the 2014 album, the band is pared to a lean electronic-rock 4-piece; the arrangements are modern, spare, minimal, emphasizing groove and rhythm, blending the sonic architecture of 21st century electronic dance music, and the sensual swerve of post-Bowie 80s pop. Pye Corner Audio - Black Mill Tapes Vol 1-4 3CD (Type) Lurking in the shadows between deep house, slow techno, John Carpenter soundtracks and classic electronica, these sibling albums transcend genres with hallucinatory, shape-shifting effect, trudging from the pastoral whimsy of Vol 1 to a darker, less certain point on the horizon. They could just as easily soundtrack a thriller about Balearic drug dealers as a sleazy, modern film noir set in Glasgow or some cosmic sci-fi adventure, spiking stealthy bass grooves with richly visual darkwave motifs and moments of beat-less, flickering neon ambient. Arguably, it's some of the most evocative analog electronica since AFX's SAW II and BoC's Music Has The Right To Children, a masterful balance of eldritch melancholia and darkside prurience ranging from supple square wave rollers to hexed ambient vignettes. Peter Buck - I Am Back to Blow Your Mind Once Again LP (Mississippi) Peter Buck of R.E.M., Baseball Project, Minus Five and a million other projects fame is back with a new set of rock and roll. All done the old fashioned way-direct tape cut to lathe cut to vinyl. This time around we have everything from garage rock to psychedelic soundscapes to pretty ballads. All new tunes that will treat you right. William Fitzsimmons - Lions (Nettwerk) Lions, the new album from William was produced by Chris Walla - guitarist for Death Cab For Cutie and previous production credits include Tegan and Sara and The Postal Service. Born to two blind parents, Fitzsimmons grew up in a home where music was integral to communication. With a Master's degree in counseling, he worked as a mental health therapist and recorded songs during grad school. Dawn Landes - Bluebird (Western Vinyl) Bluebird was produced in collaboration with Thomas Bartlett (National, Sharon Van Etten, Rufus Wainwright), and features contributions from Norah Jones. Though press coverage will understandably present this album as Dawn's answer to her ex Josh Ritter's "divorce record", she abstracts her personal narratives enough to leave them open to interpretation and a larger meaning. In the end, the fact that Bluebird is Landes' way of processing the overwhelming emotions she dealt with after her divorce doesn't matter - there are two sides to every story, and this is hers. Lydia Loveless - Somewhere Else (Bloodshot) Lydia emerges from the trenches of Columbus, OH with the gloves off and brimming with confidence on Somewhere Else. While her previous album was described as hillbilly punk with a honky-tonk heart (Uncut), this one can't be so quickly shoehorned into neat categorical cubbyholes. Writing from this new-found place of conviction, Lydia crafted 10 songs that are stark in their honesty, self-examination,and openness. It is more elemental than any of her previous material; its about longing for the other, whether that's something emotional, physical, or mental, all anchored by her arresting voice that sounds beyond her years. Creatively speaking, if Indestructible Machine was an all-night bender, Somewhere Else is the forlorn twilight of the next day, when that creeping nostalgia has you looking back for someone, something, or just... anything. New Bums - Voices in a Rented Room (Drag City) Meet the New Bums! They're not your father's Bums, but they're bringing good old-fashioned songcraft back for another try. Ben (Six Organs of Admittance) & Donovan (Skygreen Leopards); two voices and guitars with the occasional other element all compete for the loneliest sound in the room. Lots of laughs too i if you like em dark, that is. Solids - Blame Confusion (Fat Possum) Montreal band Solids went to school with bands from the 90s, like Sonic youth, Dinosaur Jr and Superchunk. Formed by Xavier Germain-Poitras (guitar) and Louis Guillemette (drums), the duo has understood that melody never shines as much as when it is forced to fight its way through many layers of distortion and feedback effects. A rare duo able to reconcile punks, rockers and metalheads. St. Paul & The Broken Bones - Half The City (Single Lock) "Within ten seconds of hearing Paul Janeway's voice - secondhand on a friend's cell phone - I was in. The first 5 was spent in disbelief. I can count on one hand the times that's happened. I admit it took a bit to hear past him. The beautiful thing was that the band was an is every bit as good. The same swagger, conviction, and - dare I say - soul. That's saying something. What sealed the deal was the songwriting, the arrangements, the dynamics - all the things that comes with having been a unit for many more years than they have. And then I experienced them live." - John Paul White (Civil Wars) Bootstraps - s/t (Caroline) Formal release of the band's debut record, featuring re-recorded tracks and an "instantly likable, intelligent and signature" sound that the Examiner labeled as "Americana-laced gorgeousness" and Paste Magazine paralleled to Ray LaMontaigne, with hints of Bon Iver and Band of Horses.
