The 3rd of March is Landlocked's 8th birthday, and like most people we usually pay tribute by ignoring it and hoping nobody notices. But this year, aww heck, sure let's celebrate! We have put together a few days of fun for the occasion: Do you like rock'n'roll? Do you like GREEN vinyl? Come party with us and shimmy to a new batch of tuff tunes from Thee Tsunamis! They're likely to leave you more scorched than soggy when their wave crashes on the beach. Six string dynamite exploding with a touch of twang, plus plenty of scream and skronk to make the surfers drop their boards and run for cover. These three gals are doing a FREE in-store performance, and showing off all the thrills of their new 7" EP, DARK WATERS AND DELIRIUM on Magnetic South. Don't be late- we're kicking things off at 4pm sharp, Saturday March 1st! All ages welcome. Next: Local upstart Hopscotch Roasters is teamed up with mobile barista Uel Zing to do some pour-over fancy coffee drinks while we play a bunch of full A-sides of new releases including: New Madrid, The Notwist, Death Vessel, Vertical Scratchers, Real Estate, Wild Beasts, Nick Waterhouse, and more! Easy enough. Come grab a quick coffee or linger around for an hour or two! Smells and sounds are free, moderately priced souvenirs available for consumption at your leisure. Monday? Mums the word, but keep your eyes and ears peeled, check out our Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for the latest! New Arrivals for February 25th .................................................. Beck - Morning Phase (Capitol) Featuring musicians who have backed him on many of his most acclaimed albums (Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Joey Waronker, Smokey Hormel, Roger Joseph Manning Jr, and Jason Falkner), Morning Phase harkens back to the stunning harmonies, song craft and staggering emotional impact of Beck's most classic ballads, all the while surging forward with undeniable optimism. "one of his best: a tenderly stunning song cycle of languid, prairie-dusted psychedelia that recalls Beck's reflective 2002 classic, Sea Change" - David Fricke, Rolling Stone. Free poster while they last! St Vincent - s/t (Loma Vista) Annie Clark at her most assured and gripping, as she meshes distorted, aggressive guitars and bold vocal and synthesizer arrangements on top of a relentless rhythm section. The album follows her last solo release, 'Strange Mercy,' which was called "one of the year's best" by the NY Times, and her collaboration with David Byrne, 'Love This Giant,' another critical smash that was dubbed "marvelous" by the New Yorker. Notwist - Close to the Glass (Sub Pop) The Notwist's 8th album, is a catchy and unpredictable marriage of playing your heart out on an instrument and the magnetic pulse of precise programming. Their sound has transformed hugely over the years, starting with their early, metallic hardcore sound in 1989, and becoming progressively catchier and incorporating the members' love of folk, classical, rap, rock and electronic music. Death Vessel - Island Intervals (Sub Pop) Joel traveled to Reykjavik on an invitation from Sigur Ros singer Jonsi and producer Alex Somers, where they spent three months together conjuring an album that's both a song cycle and a window into a mysterious and singular landscape. Pete Donnelly (The Figgs, NRBQ), Samuli Kosminen (Mum), Thorvaldur "Doddi" Thorvaldsson and Jonsi all perform on Island Intervals. Drekka - Ekki Gera Fikniefnum LP (Dais) Bloomington's own Mkl Anderson. Drekka's previous works run parallel to Artemiev's soundtracks for Andrei Tarkovsky mixed with more contemporary groups like Nurse With Wound or Coil. Ethereral folk that takes on a tranquil lullaby quality, layered and textured, deconstructed and rebuilt to cause a quiet discomfort. Utilizing his endless personal sound library, these compositions are arranged more like a film, showing us a glimpse into soundtracks to films unmade. Greg Ashley - Another Generation of Slaves (Trouble in Mind) If his groups [The Mirrors, Gris Gris] output wasn't enough, Ashley has peppered multiple solo albums in between all of these releases tracing along apath that veers to & fro from heady psychedelic freakouts to sensitive, folky tune-smithing. This is a bold step off that acid-soaked artery, the tunes herein are his most directly poetic suite of songs both melodically & lyrically. Recorded with a cadre of jazz musicians, the malleability of his players belies dizzying results, allowing Ashley to focus on communicating the feeling of the tunes in addition to playing them. Mike Gordon - Overstep (ATO) Phish's Mike Gordon cites 3 goals that he kept in mind throughout the process from start to finish: Find ways to be raw and sophisticated at the same time; Be groove oriented; Write songs that will be fun to play live. Whether an explicit goal or not, the songs on Overstep evidence Gordon's evolving ability to develop 3-dimensional characters within his songs, and to speak more directly to the truth of their condition. New Madrid - Sunswimmer (New West) Recorded during a cool, rainy July, under the direction of David Barbe (Deerhunter, Drive-By Truckers), the aural landscapes forged in Sunswimmer become almost palpable. Combining reverb-drenched vocal harmonies, soaring underwater noise and floating, meandering melodies, the sounds don't exit the speakers as much as they condense and hang in the air like the humid Athens summer that birthed them. Vertical Scratchers - Daughter of Everything (Merge) John Schmersal (ex-Brainiac/Enon/Crooks on Tape) and Christian Beaulieu (ex-Triclops!/Anywhere). A persistent element you will hear throughout the record is the percussive nature in which the guitars were played and recorded. Guitar playing is vertical scratching, and in this band, the guitar strums are almost louder than the amps. John explains, "Part of the aesthetic we were establishing when writing was to maintain a sense of urgency and raw energy without relying on volume and distortion. Wild Beasts - Present Tense (Domino) A dramatically new album while still showing their trademark sound of falsetto and alto counterpoint vocals over powerful and driving pop rhythms and melodies. It wasn't written and played so much as constructed from from tiny phrases and fragments. These pieces were layered together by Wild Beasts and Brian Eno protege, Leo Abrahams. They've spent their career thus far deconstructing exactly what it is to be a band, tossing aside the conventions and expectations of what 4 men playing together should be and sound like. Bob Mould - Workbook 25 [reissue] (Omnivore) Husker Du called it a day in '87, but Bob would reappear 2 yrs later with his first solo album, long before Sugar made him a household name. Bob shared duties with Golden Palominos' Anton Fier on drums, Pere Ubu's Tony Maimone (bass) and cellist Jane Scarpantoni. The 2nd disc is the complete 1989 performance at Chicago's Metro. 13 of the 17 tracks are previously unissued and the show contains music from the then, 2-week old, Workbook, Husker Du favorites and a cover of Richard & Linda Thompson's classic 'Shoot Out The Lights.' Skaters - Manhattan (WB) More than an album, it's a statement of purpose and a portrait of life in NYC. "We were all bartenders, so the songs are tales of experiences we had or saw, and other people who were characters in our life during the first year we were in this band," Cummings says. The album kicks off with subway noises, "Because that's the sound of our lives," Cummings says. The disc was even recorded by John Hill (Santigold, Wavves) at Greenwich Village's iconic Electric Lady Studios. Manhattan features other little pieces of the city, too, in the form of sounds nabbed on an old-school handheld tape recorder. "There's a cab ride in there, there's kids yelling in Brooklyn, girls talking in a cafe." Yellow Ostrich - Cosmos (Barsuk) Merging raw guitar riffs, lush atmospherics, brain-bending electro effects, sweetly ethereal harmonies, and earnest but unsettling lyrics. Having delved into the work of early-Krautrock and 70s synth bands while on tour the previous year, Schaaf and Tapper set to broadening their sound with locked grooves and textures inspired by artists like Neu!, Kluster, and Kraftwerk. Davidge - Slo Light (The End) The stunning debut album by Neil Davidge, renowned previously for his production, co-writing and sonic-sculpting of music for Massive Attack, David Bowie, Snoop Dogg, Damon Albarn, Primal Scream, Elizabeth Fraser and Mos Def, plus the hugely successful Halo 4 soundtrack. An album deeply-schooled in Bristol beats, electronica, soundtracks, orchestral music and more, it creates a fantasy world in which tension, darkness and beauty find the perfect equilibrium. Tacocat - NVM (Hardly Art) NVM, the sophomore release from Seattle's Tacocat. NVM, pronounced "Nevermind", feature songs about frustration, alienation, psychedelic quinceaneras, and anthems ("Crimson Wave" and "Pocket Full of Primrose") for mother natures monthly gift... all set to boppy-poppy sunny and sugary bouts of bouncy rock. These guys are the musical version of a Trapper Keeper filled with old issues of Riot Grrrl fanzines and Cheap Trick CDs. Hamell On Trial - The Happiest Man In The World (New West) The anti-folk hero returns with a brand new album that finds an inspired partnership with Kimya Dawson (as heard on the track "Together"). The friendship, forged when Hamell supported Kimya and Aesop Rock s Uncluded tour, adds a new dimension to Hamell s biting humor and political comedy that has won him legions of fans.
