Every week until Record Store Day (Saturday April 19th) we are going to highlight something fun and exciting about our own local celebration. Last week we touched on our official Songs:Ohia t-shirt to celebrate the life and music of Jason Molina, back to his humblest beginnings and the artwork from his very first 7"s. Today we are pleased to announce the return of our collaboration with Upland Brewing and their Vinyl Tap Rye Pale Ale. During RSD, all donations to our beer go towards Lotus Blossoms Educational Outreach Program. Lotus Blossoms targets underserved children, building their awareness of global cultures, and nurturing community through public performances and educational activities in Bloomington and surrounding counties. Lotus actively partners with schools, nonprofits, local businesses, and passionate individuals to strengthen our community and encourage awareness of Bloomington's place in a rich global context. In addition, a portion of the proceeds from Vinyl Tap sales at all Upland locations go towards funding Lotus Blossoms as well! Enjoy a great beer for a great cause. Record Store Day Saturday April 19th! Songs:Ohia crossbow t-shirt "reissue" Upland Vinyl Tap Rye Pale Ale + Lotus Blossoms fundraiser Check back next week for more news! New Arrivals for March 18th .................................................. The War on Drugs - Lost In The Dream (Secretly Canadian) The Philly-based project of Adam Granduciel. Written and recorded over two-plus years in Philadelphia, North Carolina, New York and New Jersey, following almost two years of nonstop touring in support of 2011's Slave Ambient, Lost In The Dream is the outstanding presentation of Granduciel's progression and growth as a songwriter, performer, and producer. It is an immense listen to be absorbed and discovered now and for decades to come. Colored vinyl first press while they last! Black Lips - Underneath the Rainbow (Vice) These 12 songs boast a stable of studio collaborators whose pedigree speaks to how much the band has grown and sonically matured over the course of their 15 year career. After letters to incarcerated studio legend Phil Spector to produce went unanswered the band convened at Dunham Studios in New York to record initial tracks with Dap Kings music director Thomas Brenneck. The group then decamped to Nashville to record several songs with Patrick Carney of The Black Keys, finally rounding out the album with a couple of songs co-produced with lifetime Lips recording collaborator, Ed Rawls. Foster the People - Supermodel (Columbia) The highly anticipated new album featuring first single "Coming of Age." The globally influenced album is the follow-up to the group's critically acclaimed debut with its gigantic single Pumped Up Kicks. Recorded in various locations around the world, it began as frontman Mark Foster and producer Paul Epworth set up a writing studio in a riad in Essaouira, Morocco at the end of 2012. "We didn't have any rules. We just created as much as we could in seven days," Foster recalls, "And in the spirit of wanderlust and discovery we ended up stumbling on the musical identity of what this record was going to feel like." Madlib & Freddie Gibbs - Pinata (Madlib Invazion) Gibbs is the product of violent, drug-laden streets but unlike most rappers with similar resumes, he brings the block to the booth without inhibition or an exaggerated persona. Pinata, a collaboration with producer Madlib, is the best distillation yet of his transparent approach to making music, combining an at times stark honesty with electrifying talent as a lyricist and performer. It is "a gangster Blaxploitation film on wax," says Gibbs, who came up on the streets of Gary, IN. Here he is joined by Mac Miller, Earl Sweatshirt, Raekwon, Scarface, Domo Genesis, Ab-Soul and a host of others in setting his soliloquies alongside film snippets & dusted funk, soul & prog musical tapestries. Bad Psychic - Soon LP (Sygil) Dripping with melodic synth and trance, Bad Psychic features Bloomington vocalist and electronic composer Liv Mershon. Sexy, melodic, ethereal and danceable! Check out her crazy window installation at Landlocked and pick up her debut LP. Sisyphus - s/t (Asthmatic Kitty) Sisyphus is the new name for the collaboration between Serengeti, Son Lux, and Sufjan Stevens (formally s/s/s), whose new project under this moniker is a self-titled album partly inspired by the art of Jim Hodges, and commissioned by the Walker Art Center and The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra's Liquid Music series in Minneapolis/St Paul. Perfect Pu**y - Say Yes To Love (Captured Tracks) One of the boldest and most intriguing projects to surface in recent years, garnering widespread critical acclaim following the release of a 4 song EP titled I have lost all desire for feeling. Veiled beneath layers of exquisitely abrasive noise, frontwoman Meredith Graves' lyrics are disarming, brutally honest and poetic, possessing a feverish intensity that can only be matched by Graves' electric stage presence. Hailing from Syracuse, NY, the band is comprised of members from the local punk and hardcore community. Kevin Drew - Darlings (Arts & Crafts) Broken Social Scene's songwriter and front man. Darlings shows Drew growing to create a breakthrough statement of personal artistry. Darlings is also his first solo album that is truly, to put it bluntly, solo. If Drew's 2007 effort Spirit If... was his inaugural step beyond the decade-long shadow of his former band, Darlings spotlights Drew with seven years more experience and maturity. Darlings reveals a more focused and refined sound; more honest, revelatory songwriting, with Drew's craft concentrated on lyrical and emotional connections, less so than guitar pedals and studio jams. Luther Dickinson - Rock 'n Roll Blues (New West) Luther enters a new phase of his storied musical career with his new solo album. As a member of North Mississippi All Stars, he may have innovated blues and boogie rock but he is also an acutely observant songwriter. The new album tells the story of a guy growing into a life in music. Luther has made himself widely known as both a talented musician and as a producer with four Grammy nominations to prove it - three in the contemporary blues category and one in traditional folk. Burnt Ones - Gift (Castle Face) Indy ex-pats, now based on the left coast. Far more psychedelic than their previous work, the album may be a bit of a surprise to fans on first listen. A potent blend of wide-eyed strummers on shifting sands is punctuated by blinking oscillators, left turns into wispy sound collage and tape manipulations, drug-rug-wrapped lushness and telephone whispers from a supremely stoned sounding Mark Tester, the guide through this cultish and vaguely sinister headphone-scape. It's a woozy and a woolly one. Lyla Foy - Mirrors the Sky (Sub Pop) The debut album by 25-year-old London songwriter Lyla Foy. Lyla started as a solo artist in 2012 under the name WALL, garnering acclaim from Black Cab Sessions, BBC Radio (Steve Lamacq declared "Magazine" his favorite song of the year), and Pitchfork (who praised Lyla's haunting cover of Karen Dalton's "Something on Your Mind," and spotlighted 2013's Shoestring EP). Lyla Foy's hypnotically hushed songs have come quite a long way over the past two years, and her worldwide deal with Sub Pop will find her spending quality time supporting Mirrors the Sky around the globe. Tycho - Awake (Ghostly) For nearly a decade, Tycho has been known as the musical alias of Scott Hansen, but with the release of Awake - his second LP for Ghostly - the solo project has evolved into a 3-piece band. Relating closer to post-rock than ambient soundscapes, the record is situated in the present, sounding more like Hansen than drawing from his influences. "This is, in many ways, the first true Tycho record." Previous Tycho releases came to fruition when an amalgam of songs were nearing completion, but Awake is where music becomes the focus and true expression becomes the result. Ruby the Rabbitfoot - New as Dew (Normaltown) Sophomore release by Athens-based songstress Ruby Kendrick. Humid grooves, glittering guitars, barnacle-sharp piano melodies, and her deft turn of phrase adorn this diverse family of pop songs. From guitar and bass, to keys and percussion, Nate Nelson compliments each track and confirms that, with a little help from her friends, New As Dew will be a brilliant addition to the RabbitFoot canon. Skrillex - Recess (Big Beat) Skrillex is part of a new generation of artists that refuse to be restricted by preconceived notions or outside expectations. "Genre has never been important to me," he insists. "I've never thought about music that way." He stands not only at the vanguard of electronic dance music, but the perpetually evolving new music industry as a whole. Tape & Vinyl & Print Zone ..................................................
