New Arrivals for April 1st .................................................. Busman's Holiday - A Long Goodbye (Joyful Noise) Local heart throbs Lewis and Addison Rogers are brothers who make pop-music together. Lewis plays guitar, and Addison plays his modest drum kit, complete with suitcase bass-drum. Maybe you've caught them at our farmer's market on a lazy Saturday morning. A Long Goodbye, the first proper album from Busman's Holiday was recorded by Mark Lawson (Arcade Fire) and mixed by Drew Vandenberg (Toro Y Moi, Kishi Bashi). RIYL: Paul Simon, Randy Newman, Van Dyke Parks, music! Free whoopee cushion with purchase!? Mac DeMarco - Salad Days (Captured Tracks) Salad Days, is the follow up to 2012's lauded Mac DeMarco 2 which saw the Edmonton local propelled into the limelight. Written and recorded around a relentless tour schedule (which picked up all over again as soon as the LP was done), Salad Days gives the listener a very personal insight into what it's all about to be Mac amidst the craziness of a rising career in a very public format. Catch him live for FREE at WIUX Culture Shock on Saturday April 12th in Dunn Meadow! Manchester Orchestra - Cope (Universal) Manchester Orchestra set a specific goal for their 4th album. "We wanted to make the kind of album that's missing at this time in rock," says frontman Andy Hull. "Something that's just brutal and pounding you over the head with every track, something unrelenting and unapologetic." Enter Cope, the Atlanta outfit's latest LP, an 11-track set that blends white-knuckle energy, full-throated vocals, and tightly fastened, radio-friendly rock. Free poster with purchase! Pure X - Angel (Fat Possum) On their third LP, it is clear that Pure X has an uncompromising musical vision. After wooing both critics and audiences alike with their seductive, submerged-in-reverberation debut Pleasure the band pulled an about-face on their sophomore album Crawling Up The Stairs, crafting a follow up that emphasized textural clarity and raw emotionality over its predecessor's intoxicating soundscapes. Now on their third LP, the internal upheaval of has fully dissipated and given way to a new found serenity, a calm which finds the band in its most potent, refined, and elemental form yet. Saintseneca - Dark Arc (Anti) While the group formed in Columbus Ohio, a majority of Saintseneca's members, including songwriter Zac Little, hail from the rural hills of Appalachia, a landscape that has infused the group's evocative music with a deep sense of introspection. Following in the footsteps of heartland bands who have sought to twist the music of the old weird America into new shapes from the Violent Femmes to Neutral Milk Hotel. S. Carey - Range of Light (Jagjaguwar) S. Carey's chosen musical expression is a hugely beatific, restorative panorama of extraordinary beauty - perfect given how landscape inspires much of Carey's imagery. His 2014 album Range Of Light - the follow-up to his debut All We Grow - takes its title from the name that 19th century naturalist John Muir gave to California's Sierra Nevada, and follows suit with a dazzling array of musical light and shade, drawn from Carey's love of jazz, modern classical and Americana. Limited color LP available while they last! Cloud Nothings - Here & Nowhere Else (Carpark) Cloud Nothings' Dylan Baldi presented an album's worth of material to his bandmates days before they'd enter the studio with esteemed producer John Congleton. The result is refined: impossibly melodic, white-knuckle noise-rock that shimmers with sumptuous detail. "It's more subtle, it's not just an in-your-face rock record. There's more going on. You can listen to a song 20 times and still hear different little things in there." Free slipmat with purchase while they last! Inventions - s/t (Temporary Residence) Inventions was formed by longtime friends, tourmates, and labelmates Matthew Cooper of Eluvium, and Mark Smith of Explosions In The Sky. There are plenty of talking points here: Cooper hasn't been in a "band" of any sort since he was a teenager; no member of EITS has released an album outside of their own since their inception in the late 90s; and, of course, this is a dream duo for anyone familiar with the unparalleled emotional resonance of Cooper and Smith's respective day jobs. Kaiser Chiefs - Education, Education, Education & War (ATO) The ten-track collection was written in London, Los Angeles and Nashville, recorded at The Maze Studio in Atlanta, and mixed at Electric Lady Studios by Michael Brauer (My Morning Jacket, Coldplay) with producer Ben H. Allen III (Gnarls Barkley, Animal Collective, Deerhunter). The record shows an evolution in maturity of songwriting and sound, and deftly executes a wide array of the bands influences. Arc Iris - s/t (Anti) The orchestral pop project of Jocie Adams, formerly of The Low Anthem. The singer formed the band to present her ambitious new songs. They includes a collective of 4 musicians plus Jocie with additional players frequently joining to expand the sound further, to create their wild exploration of all kinds of musical styles - jazz, prog rock, blues, country, folk, and classical styles. Bob Boilen of NPR calls the music "somewhat cabaret, somewhat orchestral folk, a bit of show tune and jazz band." Band of Skulls - Himalayan (Electric Blues) The album was produced by veteran knob-twiddler Nick Launay (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Arcade Fire, Nick Cave). The band had a successful year back in 2011 with their sophomore album, Sweet Sour, hitting the charts at #14 which catapulted them on a worldwide tour sharing a stage with Red Hot Chili Peppers, Black Keys, Dead Weather and Muse as well as sold out headline London shows. Himalayan includes the first single 'Asleep At The Wheel'. Deluxe version also available; free poster with purchase of any version! Dan Croll - Sweet Disarray (Capitol) British singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Dan Croll, blends folk elements and classic Paul Simon-like melodies with electronic beats, African polyrhythms, and guitar hooks. He cocoons himself in vibrant, Afrobeat-influenced sounds on From Nowhere and Compliment Your Soul, and steel drums also make an appearance in Home, adding a highlife kick to its sweet pop droopiness. It's all wrapped in a leisurely vocal style that recalls Jack Johnson - in a good way, if you can believe that. Jon Langford & Skull Orchard - Here Be Monsters (In de Goot) The album finds Jon and his band in top form with songs illustrating perfectly why he is considered an icon in the world of alternative country and a purveyor of the finest genre-agnostic rock n roll. On this release, he is joined by drummer Joe Camarillo (Waco Bothers), fellow British expats and current Chicago residents, guitarist Jim Elkington (The Zincs, Horses Ha) and bassist Alan Doughty (Waco Brothers) as well as Tawny Newsome and Jean Cook who comprise Skull Orchard. Nickel Creek - Dotted Line (Nonesuch) As Nickel Creek's 25th anniversary approached, the band members decided they ought to mark it in some way, so they got together to write music in Chris Thile's apartment last year. They ended up with six new co-written songs, which they eventually took to a studio, along with one tune by Thile, one by Sean Watkins, and two covers: Sam Phillips' "Where Is Love Now" and Mother Mother's "Hayloft". Timber Timbre - Hot Dreams (Arts & Crafts) The band's most vividly cinematic and sensual work to date. The brainchild of enigmatic Toronto-based singer-songwriter Taylor Kirk has converted legions of voracious fans worldwide with its arresting sound, blending haunted folk and plaintive soul through oblique experiemental passages. Hot Dreams again explores uncharted sonic territory, inventing lush, viscous tonality on top of Kirk and collaborator Simon Trottier's stark compositions. Hot Dreams caches the rustic grey tones of Timber Timbre (2009 ) and the angular doo-wop spook of Creep On Creepin' On (2011) in breathless neon and haze. Craig Brenner - Live at the Old Mint (self) Local piano master Craig Brenner is one of the finest ambassadors of the music of The Big Easy. The majority of the recordings were done at The Old U.S. Mint in New Orleans. Helping Brenner out is Lori Brenner on rubboard and Alfred "Uganda" Roberts on congas. It's fun to hear Brenner's "To Boogie or Not to Boogie," "The Crawdad Shuffle" and "Backstage Boogie" blend in with staples "Mess Around," "Pinetop's Boogie Woogie" and "Night Train." VA - Looking Into You: A Tribute To Jackson Browne (Music Road) Looking Into You, the first ever tribute album honoring Jackson Browne, features a mix of Browne's old friends, fellow Rock and Roll Hall Of Famers, and younger admirers offering their own interpretations of 23 hits and album cuts from the songwriter's extensive catalog. Amongst those who lent their talents to this double-disc set are Ben Harper, Don Henley with Blind Pilot, Lyle Lovett, Keb Mo, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen & Patti Scialfa, and Lucinda Williams.
