New Arrivals for April 8th .................................................. Thee Oh Sees - Drop (Castle Face) Drop was recorded in a banana-ripening warehouse (no joke) with hair-farming studio warlock Chris Woodhouse playing drums; it's also graced with the presence of talented gurus Mikal Cronin, Greer McGettrick and Casafis adding horns and vocals. The result pushes the familiar polarities of the group farther outward. Opener "Penetrating Eye" might be the heaviest Oh Sees song yet, "Transparent World" and "Put Some Reverb On My Brother" foam with seasick fuzz, and yet the ballads, like the harpsichorded "King's Nose" and the lush and stately closer "The Lens," extend their oeuvre into mellotronic, far-out pop with delicacy and grace. Afghan Whigs - Do To The Beast (Sub Pop) Do to the Beast is the first new album by The Afghan Whigs in over a decade and a half. Founded in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1988, the band has long stood out from its peers, with their savage blend of hard rock, classic soul, and frontman Greg Dulli's searing angst and obsessions. The new album is both a homecoming it marks their return to Sub Pop and a glimpse into the future of one of the most acclaimed bands of the past thirty years. Loser edition LP available while they last. One lucky person will win a test pressing! Bobby Bare Jr - Undefeated (Bloodshot) Bobby could've phoned in a career. He could have exploited the fact that he's the son of iconic Country Music Hall of Famer Bobby Bare, was born into Nashville's Music Row elite, and counted artists like Shel Silverstein as close family friends and George Jones and Tammy Wynette as next door neighbors. Instead, he blazed a path of unique songwriting craftsmanship with a voice that blows through you like an unyielding wind on the desolate prairie. Undefeated is what he calls his break-up record. Ten songs of reality checks, clever wordplay, and daring arrangements, the aural companion to that buddy who pulls up a bar stool next to yours to help soak away your sorrows. Woods - With Light and Love (Woodsist) Woods brand of pop shamanism has undergone several gradual transformations over their past few albums, but on With Light and Love, the tinkering reveals an expanded sonic palette that includes singing saw, heavier emphasis on percussion, and a saloon piano that sounds like it was rescued from a flooded basement. Distinct from both the stoned folk of their earliest recordings and the kraut-y dalliances of more recent fare, it showcases a more sophisticated brand of contemporary drug music that owes more to Magical Mystery Tour than motorik. The Both - s/t (Superego) Critically acclaimed musicians Aimee Mann and Ted Leo have joined forces for a collaborative project they call The Both. Building on a friendship forged while they were on tour together last year, it was Leo's solo sets that piqued Mann's interest in getting on stage with him and writing music together. Of the project, Mann notes, "Honestly, I feel like for the first time, I'm part of a rock band." Courtney Barnett - The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas (Mom + Pop) Courtney Barnett is a Melbourne-based guitar player & singer/songwriter. Her full length debut, "The Double EP: A Sea Of Split Peas" has exploded internationally, on the strength of the lead single "Avant Gardener". Pitchfork was so enamored with "Avant Gardener" that they name it a prestigious "Best New Track". NME named it one of the best tracks of the year calling it, "an instant classic." Jessica Lea Mayfield - Make My Head Sing (ATO) Jessica has gained acclaim for singing delicate confessions about love, heartbreak, and contradictory emotions in a way that captivates listeners and enchants critics. Whether heartbroken, or breaking hearts, Mayfield's acoustic strumming and laid back demeanor have remained consistent since her earliest recordings. On her 3rd album, Jessica takes on distorted guitar tones, crashing drums, and heavy riffs that would more likely evoke a comparison to her idols of the early 90s, than any modern day artist. It finds Jessica in a place where she is ready to take control of her music, and elevate her reputation from folk songstress to rock star. Ingrid Michaelson - Lights Out (Mom + Pop) Ingrid Michaelson is back with her 5th studio album, Lights Out. It features duets with A Great Big World and Mat Kearney. Rodney Crowell - Tarpaper Sky (New West) Crowell has pushed the boundaries of country, folk and roots music since long before the term Americana was coined as a genre, making a name for himself and gaining respect as both a songwriter and as an artist. Celebrating 40 years of making music, Crowell has created an album that harkens back to some of his most revered and loved works. This album marks a reunion of the creative partnership of Crowell and musical accomplice Steuart Smith, who was an integral part of his overall sound during the late 80s. Chuck E. Weiss - Red Beans And Weiss (Anti) Which Chuck do we talk about here? The one who so impressed blues legends Lightnin Hopkins and Willie Dixon as a Denver teenager that they took him out on the road? The one who lived in LA's Tropicana Hotel in the 70s alongside Tom Waits and Rickie Lee Jones, ending up namechecked on the classic Waits albums Small Change and Nighthawks at the Diner, and in Rickie Lee Jones hit "Chuck E's in Love"? The one who has recorded with Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Roger Miller, Dr. John, Willie Dixon? Executive produced by Johnny Depp and Tom Waits, Red Beans and Weiss blends blues, barrelhouse, and bluster into a highly entertaining whole. Billy Bragg - Live At The Union Chapel (Cooking Vinyl) Deluxe CD/DVD set from London's Union Chapel. DVD Bonus features includes a bunch of extras including (but not limited to) Live performances from The Lexington and Wembley. Also included is a "Tooth & Nail" EPK and an interview with Billy Bragg and Andrew Collins. Del Barber - Prairieography (True North) Prairieography is a departure for the Canadian songwriter, venturing further into traditional country music than his previous releases. Recorded in his hometown of Winnipeg, it was born out of a love for the Midwest, its people and their stories. Over the course of his career Del has plied his craft in theaters, festival stages, bars and community centers. His capacity to weave experiences and characters stem from a keen understanding of narrative, phrasing and metaphor, tied together by his polished finger style guitar work, warm hometown melodies and open and honest personality. The Birds of Satan - s/t (Shanabelle) The debut album by The Foo Fighters' Taylor Hawkins. The near-10-minute "The Ballad of the Birds of Satan," progresses from a typically frenetic Hawkins drum salvo into an outright heavy-prog epic concluding with an undeniable boogie groove. Elsewhere, sublime ballads "Raspberries" and the somber finale' "Too Far Gone To See" showcase additional emotional dimensions- and if that gets too heavy, the listener can always skip back to "Wait Til Tomorrow" for the first documented recorded Van Halen style guitar solo of this decade. Guest musicians on the eponymous album include Dave Grohl (guitar), Pat Smear (guitar), Drew Hester (percussion), and Rami Jaffee (keyboards), among others. Chet Faker - Built on Glass (Downtown) An artist of considerable range, Chet Faker, real name Nick Murphy, excels at crisp, soulful songwriting that merges late-90s R&B with a contemporary electronic palate influenced by a youth producing house and disco. He performs all of his own music, giving it a warm, homespun feel that also sounds like one of the worldʼs sultriest bands cranking at full steam. Dan Wilson - Love Without Fear (Ballroom) Dan is best known as the lead singer of the band Semisonic, for which he wrote the Grammy-nominated smash "Closing Time". Prior to that, he was a member of long-haired psychedelia band Trip Shakespeare in the early 90s. More recently, Dan contributed 3 songs to Adele's album, 21, including the hit "Someone Like You," which he also produced, thus earning himself a Grammy for Album of the Year. A few years earlier, Wilson took home a Song of the Year Grammy for "Not Ready to Make Nice," one of 6 songs he co-wrote for the Dixie Chicks' award-winning album Taking the Long Way.
