Contributions from Malay (Frank Ocean, Alicia Keys, Big Boi) and John Hill (Rihanna, Shakira, M.I.A.) enhance tUnE-yArDs signature sound. A record that could only have been made by its creator, at heart it's heavy yet still retains a sense of fun. ** Willie Watson - Folk Singer Vol 1 (Acony) ------------------------------------------------------------ Acony Records proudly presents Folk Singer Vol. 1, the debut solo album from Old Crow Medicine Show's Willie Watson. Produced by David Rawlings, the album features ten songs, from folk standards to obscure gems. A true solo album in every sense, hearing Watson's skillful and subtle banjo and guitar accompaniments and soaring vocals unadorned for the first time is a revelation. ** Neil Young - A Letter Home (Third Man) ------------------------------------------------------------ Third Man Records unearths Neil Young's A Letter Home. "An unheard collection of rediscovered songs from the past recorded on ancient electro mechanical technology captures and unleashes the essence of something that could have been gone forever..." As for the track-listing, Young chose songs that have personal meaning for him, such as British folk artist Bert Jansch's "Needle of Death" (which inspired Young to write 1972's "Needle and the Damage Done"), Bob Dylan's "Girl from the North Country," Willie Nelson's "Crazy," Don Everly's "I Wonder If I Care as Much," Bruce Springsteen's "My Home Town," and many others. ** Brian Eno & Karl Hyde - Someday World (Warp) ------------------------------------------------------------ 'Someday World' comprises nine songs, composed and sung by Eno & Hyde together with a highly distinguished cast of supporting musicians. The release was produced by Brian Eno with 20 year old Fred Gibson, continuing an ongoing collaboration between Karl and Brian which sees the two together on a complete album for the very first time. ** Liam Finn - The Nihilist (Yep Roc) ------------------------------------------------------------ The album's 12 tracks find Finn at his most refined and inventive in the studio, with other-worldly arrangements and blissfully catchy hooks. Finn plays 67 instruments on the record and maniacally assembled the album with contributions from frequent collaborators Eliza Jane Barnes (vocals), his brother Elroy (drums) and fellow NZ songwriter Jol Mulholland (bass) in sessions entirely between the hours of sunset and sunrise in a Brooklyn studio overlooking the Manhattan skyline. ** Fujiya & Miyagi - Artificial Sweeteners (Yep Roc) ------------------------------------------------------------ Ladies and gentlemen, get ready to rot your teeth on Artificial Sweeteners. Coming off their more live band-orientated 4th album, Ventriloquizzing, here they return to their roots, with an album that is their most overtly electronic since their mighty 2nd LP, 2006's Transparent Things. Reaching back to the influences that got them into dance music in the first place, beach parties, warehouse raves in their native Brighton, early Warp Records and Carl Craig, the group wrote at an unchartered prolificacy, reveling in digging out their old samplers and synths and sizing them up against the digital technology they continue to explore the limits of. ** Lily Allen - Sheezus (WB) ------------------------------------------------------------ In 2006, Lily Allen bounced onto the scene like a cartoon bomb painted to look like a beach ball. Her debut, "Alright, Still," was equal parts sunshine and snark - a ska-pop album about skeevy pick-up artists, sexually dysfunctional exes and all the sordid stuff going on just below the surface of respectable society. It was the album No Doubt would have made in 1995 had Gwen Stefani been a little more jaded and a whole lot funnier, and it made the UK singer a huge star. ** Lykke Li - I Never Learn (Atlantic) ------------------------------------------------------------ On her new album I Never Learn, the Swedish pop singer goes grand and widescreen, filling her breakup songs up with cavernous reverb and larger-than-life sentiment. The songs are like what Nancy Sinatra might have recorded back in the day if she had a Swedish accent, and if she realized she had to spend all her summers singing for vast festival crowds. ** Atmosphere - Southsiders (Rhymesayers) ------------------------------------------------------------ While Southsiders is a celebration of the group's fortitude, it is also a deeply introspective, and sometimes conflicted, work. "It's a natural progression from the last record, The Family Sign, which was about growing my family," says Slug, now a father to three, who finds himself contemplating mortality. "I'm starting to think, 'What is post family man? What am I supposed to rap about now?' I'm sticking to my roots, rapping about what I'm doing, what I think about. This record is much like the other ones a very detailed look at my life." ** Ben & Ellen Harper - Childhood Home (Concord) ------------------------------------------------------------ Three-time Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter/musician Ben Harper and his mother Ellen have collaborated to create an absorbing, deeply personal collection of original songs. Childhood Home features ten songs, six written by Ben and four written by Ellen, that explore the intricacies of family life. with honesty and generous intimacy. ** Nikki Lane - All or Nothin (New West) ------------------------------------------------------------ For her hotly anticipated sophomore album Nashville songstress Nikki Lane teamed up with Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys for a record that turns the vulnerable singer-songwriter stereotype on its ears. With songs that crucify ex-boyfriends, celebrate one-night stands (as long as she can bolt town right after) and proclaim it's always the right time to do the wrong thing, Lane comes across like a modern-era Wanda Jackson, albeit with more oats to sow. ** Morning Parade - Pure Adulterated Joy (So) ------------------------------------------------------------ Losing a bit of the spacey atmosphere explored in its debut and replacing it with more rock-oriented riffs, Morning Parade takes a comfortable step away from the past on Pure Adulterated Joy. The Essex quintet stayed close to its original sound, however, still kicking out radio-friendly synth pop/alternative rock tracks that will once again reach a wide fan base. This is largely thanks to the band's undeniable catchiness and singer Steve Sparrow's silky voice. ** Naughty Boy - Hotel Cabana (Capitol) ------------------------------------------------------------ Over the last 12 months, Naughty Boy has reintroduced the charts to the sound of garage beats, house and trip-hop, his work boasts an epic, dramatic, ethereal quality. Having crafted compositions for everyone from Rhianna, Fantasia, Alicia Keys and Susan Boyle - Naughty Boy's conceptual debut album Hotel Cabana is now here. Regular and deluxe versions avilable. ** VA - All My Friends: Celebrating The Songs & Voice Of Gregg Allman (Rounder) ------------------------------------------------------------ Featuring momentous performances by Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Devon Allman, Robert Randolph, Jimmy Hall, Sam Moore, Keb Mo, Brantley Gilbert, Jess Franklin, Dr. John, Pat Monahan, John Hiatt, Jaimoe, Taj Mahal, Gregg Allman, Widespread Panic, Trace Adkins, Vince Gill, Martina McBride, Eric Church, Jackson Browne, Zac Brown, and The Allman Brothers Band. Shot at the historic Fox Theatre in Atlanta, this remarkable piece pays tribute to a voice that once heard is never forgotten. 2CD + DVD also available. ** Tape & Vinyl & Print Zone ------------------------------------------------------------ Bully - Brainfreeze 7" (self) Bully - Milkman 7" (Chicken Ranch) Cabaret Voltaire - LP reissues (Mute) Fand Island - Starquake 7" flexi (Joyful Noise) Thee Headcottees LP reissues (Damaged Goods) Shindig Magazine - Space Rock issue (Shindig) VA - Lo and Behold: Folk Blues Night Series [tapes] (Lo & Behold) ** Also Released This Week ------------------------------------------------------------ Andrew Jackson Jihad - Christmas Island (Side One Dummy) Current Swell - Ulysses (Nettwerk) Kina Grannis - Elements (One Haven) Curtis Harding - Soul Power (Burger) The Horrors - Luminous (XL) Natalie Merchant - s/t (Nonesuch) Papercuts - Life Among The Savages (Caroline) Santana - Corazon (RCA) Survival Knife - Loose Power (Glacial Pace) VA - A Celebration Of Blues & Soul: The 1989 Presidential Inaugural Concert (Shout) ** Upcoming Concerts ------------------------------------------------------------ Hey out-of-towners and home-bodies!
