Welcome to Summer in Bloomington! Its gonna get weird. Our regular coffee-pouring-new-release-listening-party returns on Sunday June 8th. Come enjoy some fresh single-origin coffee from Hopscotch Roasters and Uel Zing while we serenade you from our turntable with the newest sounds imaginable. On June 3rd, the first three albums by a band called Led Zeppelin are being reissued. There are FIVE versions of each album being made. They are: CD, Deluxe CD, LP, Deluxe LP, and Super Deluxe CD+LP+book editions. The albums have been remastered by Jimmy Page. The deluxe versions include unreleased companion audio (Led Zeppelin features a previously unreleased October 1969 concert from Paris, II & III feature previously unreleased studio outtakes). The Super Deluxe versions includ a hard bound, 70+ page book and a limited edition print. We graciously accept pre-orders for any format! New Arrivals for May 20th .................................................. Zero Boys - Monkey (self) Indiana hardcore outfit Zero Boys issue their first album in over 20 years! The fourth full-length from the outfit and first since The Heimlich Maneuver was issued way back in 1993. The group's essential 1981 debut Vicious Circle and the History Of compilation were reissued by Secretly Canadian in 2009. Coldplay - Ghost Stories (Atlantic) Some things about Coldplay never change - frontman Chris Martin's dreamy falsetto, the dramatic piano flourishes, a general air of melancholy - but the maestros of feelings-rock have never made the same album twice. There's a restlessness to the band that most acts in their position would find both exhausting and potentially career-threatening. But rather than rewrite "Clocks" ad infinitum, Coldplay use their self-doubt to explore new avenues. From the twinkling drones beneath "Midnight" to the synth-swirl outro on "Oceans." The moodier numbers, especially "Midnight" and "Ink," masterfully subvert Martin's haunting voice in the mix, which offers an apt metaphor for his recent separation from Gwyneth Paltrow: When the uncoupling came, he consciously got lost in the music. Conor Oberst - Upside Down Mountain (Nonesuch) Upside Down Mountain is a study in contrasts, a glance up to the heavens and a glimpse into the abyss. "There's a certain solitude to this record," Oberst admits, and themes of loneliness, dislocation, and regret repeatedly surface. Yet its making was far from solitary, as Oberst gathered friends old and new for the recording, including producer Jonathan Wilson and the Swedish sibling folk-rock vocal duo First Aid Kit. The overall warmth of the sound tempers the starkness of the stories being told and Oberst renders his carefully detailed lyrics with an easy intimacy, the still youthful quaver in his voice poignantly underscoring the rueful, decidedly mature words. LP version soon. Guided by Voices - Cool Planet (GBV) Recorded during the sub-freezing Polar Vortex of 2014, Cool Planet is another wineskin full of great songs to listen to, recorded in a single proper studio - Cyberteknics in Dayton, Ohio - for the first time since their inexhaustible reformation. There's some unusually consistent and consistently awesome production on Cool Planet, thanks to the array of vintage equipment on offer at Cyberteknics. Tweak Bird - Any Ol Way LP/CS (Lets Pretend) Tweak Bird is a two-piece psychedelic stoner rock band based in Los Angeles, made up of brothers Ashton and Caleb Bird. Their music is gleeful, bruising, and delightfully weird. Any Ol Way is their fourth record and their sound continues to evolve. This record is simplicity incarnate. Blissed out vocals over freaky rock jams. Jolie Holland - Wine Dark Sea (Anti) Jolie has always embodied everything weird and wonderful in the history of American music, but Wine Dark Sea takes it to a new level. Raw and unrestrained, bristling with kinetic energy, Wine Dark Sea is unlike anything she's ever recorded, but is also the purest and most assured evocation of Holland's vision to date. A joyfully unrestrained masterwork, the record delivers: louder, noisier, raw and visceral. It is an inventive and fiery reimagining of delta blues, free jazz, classic r&b and country, infused throughout with a no wave abandon. Pujol - Kludge (Saddle Creek) Kludge idiosyncratically captures life as it exists in our weird almost future world of flying robots, cancer from food, cell phone wire taps, metadata, $7.25ish minimum wage and $15.50 an hour endless choice buffets. Yet, the album possesses that inherent sense of timelessness that exists in all great music. Thanks to its combination of addictively fetching rock 'n' roll and Daniel Pujol's lyrical brilliance, the end result proves yet again that Daniel Pujol is, first and foremost, a songwriter. Toumani & Sidiki Diabate - s/t (Nonesuch) The album arrives in the wake of the hardline Islamic insurgency that threatened a ban on music in the north of Mali. With this album, Toumani aims "to show the positive side of Mali," to reassert the legacy of a country with access to untold musical riches. The songs are named, in griot tradition, to honor various people, places or events. The playing is dazzling. Toumani and Sidiki communicate telepathically, finishing of each other s musical sentences. The kora, often the quietest of instruments, is here played with verve, attack, groove, wit, swing, bounce, ecstatic excitement and exquisite intimacy and always with a flowing pulse and groove. The Everymen - Givin' Up On Free Jazz (Ernest Jenning) Since forming in 2009, New Jersey's The Everymen have quickly built a rock solid resume thanks to their tirelss average of over 100 shows a year, and a reputation as one of the hardest working and most exciting live bands around. Standing 9 members strong, The Everymen are reminiscent of The E Street Band in stature, Rocket From The Crypt in searing energy, Meat Loaf in production and The Replacements in boozy, backroom party vibes. The Flaming Lips - 7 Skies H3 (WB) A 50 minute distillation across 10 tracks of the remarkable 24-hour song recorded at Tarbox Road Studios in 2011. The vinyl version came out on Record Store Day, now we have the CD version. Kenny Wayne Shepherd - Goin Home (Concord) Recorded in a mere 11 days, Goin Home finds Shepherd revisiting a dozen of the vintage blues classics that first ignited his love of the blues and inspired him to play guitar. The artist's sharp interpretive skills and sublime guitar work shine on his renditions of tunes originally popularized by such blues icons as BB King, Albert King, Freddie King, Muddy Waters, Magic Sam, Johnny "Guitar" Watson, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Buddy Guy and Junior Wells. Hank Williams - The Garden Spot Program 1950 (Omnivore) Rescued from obscurity, these shows originally aired over 6 decades ago, and The Garden Spot Programs, 1950 collects material from the four of them now known to exist. From hits to standards to songs rarely (if ever) performed, this is pure Hank Williams, including playful, between song banter. Fully restored to incredible quality, The Garden Spot Programs, 1950 is more like being in the studio when they were recorded than actually listening to them on the radio! The CD packaging contains rare photos from the collection of set co-producer and Williams biographer, Colin Escott, as well as new liners.
