Our regular coffee-pouring-new-release-listening-party returns on Sunday June 8th. Come enjoy some fresh single-origin coffee from Hopscotch Roasters and Uel Zing while we serenade you from our turntable with the newest sounds imaginable. On June 3rd, the first three albums by a band called Led Zeppelin are being reissued. There are FIVE versions of each album being made. They are: CD, Deluxe CD, LP, Deluxe LP, and Super Deluxe CD+LP+book editions. The albums have been remastered by Jimmy Page. The deluxe versions include unreleased companion audio (Led Zeppelin features a previously unreleased October 1969 concert from Paris, II & III feature previously unreleased studio outtakes). The Super Deluxe versions includ a hard bound, 70+ page book and a limited edition print. We graciously accept pre-orders for any format! ** New Arrivals for May 27th ------------------------------------------------------------ ** Vacation Club - Heaven is Too High LP (Magnetic South) ------------------------------------------------------------ These Indiana boys deliver infectiously poppy bubblegum chewed up and spit out by the agitated and chemical laced mind of misspent Midwestern youth. In the tradition of Hoosier Hysteria proto-punk, ala the Gizmos and the Panics, the Vacation boys turn the sounds of rocknroll's distant shores into a homebaked brand of mutant sunshine and junkstore adrenaline. Sweet-tart melodies wrapped in colorful capsules that will turn your innards into a kaleidoscopic feast of rock's most alkaline fruit flavors. Catchy punk riffs and teenybop backup vocals dart through stratospheric layers of reverb and corrosive fuzz guitar. ** Sharon Van Etten - Are We There (Jagjaguwar) ------------------------------------------------------------ For all the attention that was paid to her 2012 break-through Tramp, Sharon is an artist with a hunger to turn another corner and to delve deeper, writing from a place of honesty and vulnerability to create a bond with the listener that few contemporary musicians can match. Compelled by a restless spirit, Van Etten is continuously challenging herself. Now, the result is Are We There, a self-produced album of exceptional intimacy, sublime generosity, and immense breadth. ** Neil Young - A Letter Home (Reprise) ------------------------------------------------------------ Neil recorded a collection of covers on Jack White's refurbished 1947 Voice-O-Graph recording booth at Third Man's Nashville headquarters. Imagine a very simple recording studio not much larger than a phone booth and you'll get the idea. Recorded live to one-track, mono, the album has an inherent warm, primitive feel of a vintage Folkways recording. Young chose songs that have personal meaning for him, such as British folk artist Bert Jansch's "Needle of Death" (which inspired Young to write 1972's "Needle and the Damage Done"), Dylan's "Girl from the North Country," Willie's "Crazy," Everly's "I Wonder If I Care as Much," Bruce's "My Home Town," and many others. ** Spanish Gold - South of Nowhere (BMG) ------------------------------------------------------------ The debut from a new band featuring former Hacienda singer Dante Schwebel, Grupo Fantasma guitarist Adrian Quesada and My Morning Jacket drummer Patrick Hallahan - the album is a densely layered love letter to Laredo, the spirited but often troubled Texas border town where Schwebel and Quesada grew up. The LP embodies both a high-charged tension and defiantly joyful mood. And in their seamless whirling-together of rock & roll, soul, psychedelia, and pop - comes a groove-heavy sound at turns inspired by Donny Hathaway, 70s rock, and early 90s hip-hop. ** Owen Pallett - In Conflict (Domino) ------------------------------------------------------------ In Conflict was written and produced by Pallett, recorded with the core rhythm section of Robbie Gordon and Matt Smith, and features contributions from Brian Eno and The Czech FILMharmonic Orchestra, amongst others. In Conflict is full of love songs more specifically, songs about liminal states and our loved ones locked in battle with them. Pallett was recently nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Score, alongside Arcade Fire for their work on the soundtrack to Spike Jonze's Her. ** Lee Bains III & the Glory Fires - Dereconstructed (Sub Pop) ------------------------------------------------------------ Dereconstructed is a careening, road raging, all night party of a record. Informed by a distinctly southern hoodoo, it is a master class in authentic Gulf Coast choogle. Having cut his teeth in the Dexateens, Lee Bains has been properly schooled in how to throw down, so much so that even his hyper literate musings are no match for the blown out distortion that gives this record it's blistering urgency. Playing at The Bishop on July 13th! ** They Might Be Giants - Idlewild (Idlewild) ------------------------------------------------------------ No reunions! No rehab! No breaks! TMBG have pulled off the inconceivable - they have continued to work, create and evolve musically and artistically uninterrupted for 30 years. They've recorded 16 studio albums and remained an active live act. In celebration of their most recent decade, TMBG are releasing Idlewild, a 17 song album. While the compilation is neither a 'best of' nor a rarities set, it is an ultra-vivid illustration of the band's prodigious output and singular musical vision. LP next month. ** Cherub - Year of the Caprese (Columbia) ------------------------------------------------------------ Cherub - Nashville's own risque, electro-pop duo release their major label debut. Year Of The Caprese proves to be Cherub's boldest alignment of their diverse musical interests ranging from brash rock to playful pop to seductive R&B, highlighting Kelley's clever songcraft and Huber's incredible live production. The pair have been heating up radio with their infectious viral hit "Doses & Mimosas." ** John Fullbright - Songs (Blue Dirt) ------------------------------------------------------------ John Fullbright's follow-up to his Grammy-nominated debut, From The Ground Up. Songs has its moments of darkness, tracks born from pain and heartbreak, but for a craftsman like Fullbright, there are few greater joys than carving emotion into music, taking a stab at that lofty goal of immortality through song. It makes he and his fans happy, and there's nothing bad about that. ** Meyhem Lauren & Buckwild - Silk Pyramids (Thrice Great) ------------------------------------------------------------ First national release from Queens NYC MC Meyhem Lauren. The entire album is produced by multi-platinum producer Buckwild (Big Pun, Notorious B.I.G., Black Rob, etc). Meyhem Lauren is in the vein of the resurgent New York sound personified by Action Bronson. ** Reuben and the Dark - Funeral Sky (Arts & Crafts) ------------------------------------------------------------ Calgary's Reuben and The Dark is a collection of 5 multi-instrumentalists and vocalists led by Reuben Bollock. The band makes chilling, emotive, gospel-inflected soul, driven by dark, introspective lyrics that explore the duality of misery and joy. Boasting a rare chemistry sparked by the relationship of Reuben and his brother, they've emerged organically from Canada's stellar independent music landscape. ** Tape & Vinyl & Print Zone ------------------------------------------------------------ The Bats - LP reissues (Flying Nun) Cheater Slicks - Destination Lonely [LP reissue] (Desperate) Sandy Denny and the Strawbs - All Our Own Work 2LP (Numerophon) Frantix - My Dad's a Fuckin Alcoholic LP (Alternative Tentacles) Alan Licht & Brian Chase - We Thought We Could Do Anything LP (New Images) Mordecai - Neil's Generator LP (Richie) OBN IIIs - Third Time to Harm (Tic Tac Totally) Son Lux - Alternate Worlds 12" (Joyful Noise) Split Single - Fragmented World LP (Inside Outside) Vanhelgd - Relics Of Sulphur Salvation LP (20 Buck Spin) Wand / Inutili - split 7" (Good Bye Boozy) ** Also Released This Week ------------------------------------------------------------ Haunted Hearts - Initiation (Zoo) Moe - No Guts, No Glory (Welk) Watter [Grails/Slint] - This World (Temporary Residence) VA - This Vinyl Weighs a Ton DVD (Stones Throw) ** Upcoming Concerts ------------------------------------------------------------ Hey out-of-towners and home-bodies!
