Awesome. ** New Arrivals for June 3rd ------------------------------------------------------------ ** Parquet Courts - Sunbathing Animal (Whats your Rupture) ------------------------------------------------------------ Much as Light Up Gold & the subsequent EP Tally All The Things That You Broke offered a uniquely tattered perspective on everyday life, Sunbathing Animal applies the same layered thoughts and sprawling noise to more cerebral, inward-looking themes. While heightened in its heaviness and mania, the album also represents a huge leap forward in terms of songwriting and vision. ** Fucked Up - Glass Boys (Matador) ------------------------------------------------------------ In contrast to the sprawling epic of their last album, the punk rock opera David Comes To Life, the 2014 album returns to rock n roll basics, verse-chorus-verse-chorus. It also features guitar solos, mellotron and piano. Recorded for the first time in analogue, the album is bathed in a warm, almost romantic glow. In particular, Jonah Falco's virtuosic drumming shines forth, each snare hit shattering the air. Damian Abraham's throaty growl is not less punk, but the overall effect is a more human, relatable Fucked Up. While the imagery still includes the usual high concept references, Abraham and Mike's lyrics mostly address the puzzle of being in a punk rock band while having children and being in their early 30s. ** Hamilton Leithauser [The Walkmen] - Black Hours (Ribbon) ------------------------------------------------------------ Inaugurating a new chapter in an already remarkable career, Hamilton Leithauser, front man for The Walkmen, is releasing his solo debut, Black Hours. The album brings him full circle and then some, from lonely midwinter piano-and-vocals sessions, to loud, live Rock n Roll and back again. Featuring Leithauser with collaborators including Rostam Batmanglij (Vampire Weekend), Paul Maroon (The Walkmen), Morgan Henderson (Fleet Foxes), Richard Swift, and Amber Coffman (Dirty Projectors), Black Hours showcases Leithauser at his most passionate and personal. ** Bob Mould - Beauty & Ruin (Merge) ------------------------------------------------------------ Bob Mould's 2014 album Beauty & Ruin is a twelve-track journey of loss, reflection, conciliation, and coming through the other side. Much of Beauty & Ruin deals with the passing of Mould's father in October 2012, Bob's struggle to come to terms with it, himself, and his own identity and legacy, and repercussions of all of the above on his ongoing relationships in the land of the living. Beauty & Ruin is a challenging work of raw beauty and may well be Bob Mould's finest work since his 1989 solo debut, Workbook. ** Lee Fields & the Expressions - Emma Jean (Truth & Soul) ------------------------------------------------------------ Soul legend Lee Fields has re-teamed with The Expressions for new album Emma Jean, out June 3 on Brooklyn’s Truth & Soul Records. Coming at a time when many new artists are trying to emulate the soul and swagger of the 1960s, Mr. Fields showers us with authenticity on the 11-track set, highlighted by first single "Magnolia". ** Sage Francis - Copper Gone (Strange Famous) ------------------------------------------------------------ After a 4-year hiatus, the indie rap icon has returned with the June 2014 release of Copper Gone on Strange Famous Records. It features beat production from long-time music affiliates Buck 65, Alias, Cecil Otter, Reanimator, and more. ** Rich Robinson - The Ceaseless Sight (The End) ------------------------------------------------------------ On the eve of the release of his third solo album, Rich Robinson, best known as the guitarist, songwriter, and founder of The Black Crowes, stands ready to complete the solo artist evolution that he began ten years earlier. The Ceaseless Sight is an album that represents the full maturation of Rich as a songwriter, vocalist, and solo artist. The album finds Robinson stepping solidly into his own as a solo artist as he adds confident vocalist and lyricist to his accomplished musical resume. ** Harry Dean Stanton - Partly Fiction (Omnivore) ------------------------------------------------------------ No doubt, you’ve seen Harry Dean Stanton in at least one of his 250 films. But have you heard him sing? The many facets of Harry Dean Stanton are explored in Harry Dean Stanton: Partly Fiction, a documentary directed by Sophie Huber. It documents the iconic actor in his intimate moments and features film clips, as well as Stanton performing his own heart-breaking renditions of American folk songs. ** Echo & the Bunnymen - Meteorites (Savoy) ------------------------------------------------------------ Formed in 1978, the Bunnymen have been a vital force in the indie rock world for over 36 years having won over millions of obsessive music fans worldwide and indelibly influenced countless bands with their signature sound from the Flaming Lips to Coldplay to Pavement. Meteorites is a key addition to their repertoire. It's an intimate song cycle written by Ian McCulloch performed by the band with a renewed sense of purpose showcasing all of their unmistakable musical hallmarks while taking them to a new level. Our version includes bonus tracks. ** Kan Wakan - Moving On (Verve) ------------------------------------------------------------ Kan Wakan arrive with a striking breadth of vision that immediately places them among modern pop’s most beguiling and inventive new artists. The Los Angeles-based group’s extraordinary self-titled debut EP introduced their ornate and enveloping amalgam of psychedelic soul, post rock, electronica, noir jazz, 60s soundtrack stylings, and orchestral pop, all reshaped and rearranged to create something both startlingly original and utterly contemporary. ** The Orwells - Disgraceland (Atlantic) ------------------------------------------------------------ The story of Disgraceland - recorded in the fall of 2013 at studios in London, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and Woodstock, NY - is the story of The Orwells escaping the confines of their hometown and of their own expectations for themselves. They teamed with producers Chris Coady (Smith Westerns, Beach House), Jim Abbiss (Arctic Monkeys) and Dave Sitek (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Santigold, TV On the Radio) to make the record. ** Tape & Vinyl & Print Zone ------------------------------------------------------------ American Analog Set - Know by Heart [reissue LP] (Barsuk) Blank Range - Before I Go To Sleep 7" (Sturdy Girls) Blank Range - Phase II [tape] (Sturdy Girls) Jolie Holland - Wine Dark Sea LP (Anti) Kelis - Rumble 12" [Actress remix] (Ninja Tune) Low Life - Dogging LP (RIP Society) Merchandise / Milk Music / Destruction Unit - split LP (540) M.O.B. - MOB LP (RIP Society) No Coast - Kick Out the Gramps 7" (Glory Hole) Rat Columns - Leaf LP (RIP Society) Rock A Teens - Sweet Bird of Youth LP (Merge) Naomi Shelton - Sinner 7" (Daptone) The Shivvers - s/t LP (Sing Sing) Christian Taylor - Ampersand Blues Band 7" (Glory Hole) Thirteen - Girls Aren't the Same 7" (Sing Sing) Vanhelgd - Relics Of Sulphur Salvation LP (20 Buck Spin) VA - FSDC3 [tape] (Glory Hole) VA - Who's a Punk: The Very Best of British Punksploitation LP (Sham) ** Also Released This Week ------------------------------------------------------------ Camper Van Beethoven - El Camino Real (429) Die Antwoord - Donker Mag (Zef) 50 Cent - Animal Ambition: An Untamed Desire To Win (G Unit) Ben Frost - Aurora (Mute) Jon Hassell - City: Works of Fiction (All Saints) Joe Henry - Invisible Hour (Work Song) Gabriel Kahane - The Ambassador (Sony) King Buzzo - This Machine Kills Artists (Ipecac) Matisyahu - Akeda (Elm City) Morrissey - Vauxhall & I [dlx reissue] (Parlophone) Tigers Jaw - Charmer (Run for Cover) VA - Decadubs (Hyperdub) ** Upcoming Concerts ------------------------------------------------------------ Hey out-of-towners and home-bodies!
