Its summertime! Need some new music? Here's the latest, alphabetically. New Arrivals for June 17th .................................................. The Antlers - Familiars (Anti) In 7 years together, The Antlers have created a quiet revolution in thought and sound with their harrowing and often haunted tales of love unmoored, human frailty and emotional evisceration. On Familiars, their 5th album, they have resumed the journey they began with 2009's Hospice and continued over Burst Apart and Undersea, which found the trio picking their way through a labyrinth of fear, doubt, love and loss against a backdrop of layered textural songs that were as deeply atmospheric as they were anthemic. More hopeful in mood than its predecessors, the new album emanates a palpable release of despair and an almost operatic verve on nine songs that took shape over the past year and a half. Big Freedia - Just Be Free (Queen Diva) As the first openly gay rapper to gain mainstream success, Big Freedia is the undisputed Queen of Bounce. Born and raised in New Orleans, she has her own TV show on FUSE TV, and an ever-growing fanbase who pack clubs. Now preparing for her first national album release, "Just Be Free" isn't just a collection of her most recent work. With 10 tracks about acceptance, love and embracing differences, it's Liberation Theology: welcome to a more urgent church. "Gender is on a continuum," explains Freedia. "My shows are all about embracing your body, your azz, your identity, and so I wanted the theme of my album to be in sync with who I am. It's what I'm about: no restrictions. America has always been about independence. As part of the LGBT community, it's our time, but I stand for the rights of all people." Cerebral Ballzy - Jaded & Faded (Cult) "...Probably the coolest band in the world at the moment, a truly legit modern hardcore/punk band, and by far my favorite." - Julian Casblancas. Jaded & Faded is produced by David Sitek [TV On The Radio]. Describing his time in the studio while recording the record, Titus says "there was a lot of power-pop influence going on with [the album]. Titus has described the sound of "Jaded & Faded" as "way more melodic...a lot of it is rooted in our favorite power pop bands like the Nerds and Blondie. Melodic punk that really holds something. Still aggressive, too. The Fresh & Onlys - House of Spirits (Mexican Summer) With surreal nightmares, glistening pop tempered by sinister undertones and even unsettling experimentalism, The Fresh & Onlys' 5th album, House of Spirits is the San Francisco quartet's most focused and most experimental yet. The material gestated during vocalist Tim Cohen's isolated stay on an Arizonan horse ranch where he documented dreams in a bedside notebook. The resultant songs are by turns pristine, feverish, and bizarre, as they returned to Lucky Cat Studios in San Francisco with Phil Manley to recast the textures, leaps of logic and evocative character of Cohen's dreams into songs. Glass Animals - Zaba (Harvest) Having previously recorded all their music in an isolated, home-built studio ('The Shed'), deep in the forests of Oxfordshire, Glass Animals vocalist and production dynamo Dave Bayley moved with the band to the more urban surroundings of Paul Epworth's London studio to start work on their debut album Zaba. Inspired by Kanye West and Charles Darwin, Nina Simone and the Velvet Underground, ZABA is a rich and textured work, a very special record indeed. With Dave producing and Epworth as A&R and mentor, the studio became their home and the band were free to record, improvise and write at their own speed, making their sound a bigger, brighter, heavier and more intense experience. David Gray - Mutineers (+180) David Gray's 10th album finds the singer-songwriter steering into unfamiliar territory while cultivating a pugnacious but respectful relationship with his own history. "I think if you're going forward with an open heart, good things will happen", says David. "You have to sort of tear up the past and let it go". The only certainty that David had at the commencement of his new recording was the need to surprise himself, not just in terms of how he worked, but the ideas that drove him and the people he worked with. David's collaborator, producer and occasional combatant during this raid on new horizons was Lamb's Andy Barlow. "His brief was - don't let me make the same record I've made before, take me out of my comfort zone." Greys - If Anything (Carpark) If Anything, the first full-length by Greys, is the young quartet's own warped update of vintage post-punk; frenetic guitars running against walls of noise, held together by sharp strands of melody. Written over the summer of 2013 and recorded in ten days at Toronto's Candle Recording studio, If Anything is a fulfilling aftershock of noise rock, immediately arresting and bursting with confidence. Lower - Seek Warmer Climes (Matador) Seek Warmer Climes, Lower's debut album, sparkles with the harmonic dissonance and high-strung urgency of their post-punk forebears. But the Copenhagen-based four piece also channel the romance and drama of great singer-songwriters, from late-period Scott Walker to Bryan Ferry. The result is a hugely ambitious and affecting rock album that enters deeply personal and unusual sonic and topical spaces. Lower have developed an inimitable record that secures itself in your head with lyrics that resonate like psychic warnings. Miniature Tigers - Cruel Runnings (Yebo) Cruel Runnings, is something halfway between nostalgia and the ecstatic now, an album that yearns for the recent past while staring open-hearted at what the present dares to bring. Willie Nelson - Band of Brothers (Legacy) The much-anticipated successor To All The Girls... (which became Willie's first Top 10 album in more than 3 decades) Band of Brothers is the artist's first album of predominately new original material in nearly two decades, debuting the master tunesmith's first major batch of newly-penned songs since his Spirit album in 1996. Rounding out the album are five songs, penned by others, which compliment and unite the album's sonic textures and lyric themes. Included are Willie's interpretations of Vince Gill's "Whenever You Come Around", Billy Joe Shaver's "The Git Go" (a duet with Jamey Johnson) and the appropriately-titled "Songwriter," written by Gordie Sampson and Bill Anderson. Sam Smith - In the Lonely Hour (Capitol) Sam Smith is the 21 year old winner of this year's Brits Critics Choice award as well as the winner of the BBC Sound of 2014 poll. He is the first and only male winner of both honors. Named the Artist to watch for 2014, Most Anticipated album of the year in USA Today, LA Times, CNN, Teen Vogue, Huffington Post, Shazam and more. You might also recognize his voice from the breakthrough album by Disclosure from 2013. White Lung - Deep Fantasy (Domino) Deep Fantasy is the third album from the hard hitting rock n' roll outfit. After a year plus of near constant touring (w/ Iceage, Parquet Courts, Fucked Up) behind their sophomore album Sorry they slimmed down to a trio to record: vocalist Mish Way, drummer Anne-Marie Vassiliou and guitarist Kenneth William. The album was made primarily in their hometown of Vancouver with producer Jesse Gander. They're as confrontational as before, but they've opened their sound up just enough to draw listeners in before kicking them in the face. (In a good way.)
