Its summertime! Need some new music? Here's the latest, alphabetically. New Arrivals for June 24th .................................................. Mastodon - Once More Round the Sun (Reprise) Art is a cyclical beast. The same can easily be said of Grammy Award nominated hard rock juggernaut Mastodon. The group s four members recognize the importance of life s omnipresent cycles on their sixth full-length album, Once More 'Round the Sun. The band orbits around themes of loss and rebirth, twirling a sonic spiral of its signature robust riffing, hypnotically haunting soundscapes, triage of dynamic voices, and thundering seismic grooves. The very title says something slightly different for each member. "Quite literally, Once More 'Round the Sun means a year-in-the-life," explains Dailor. "Lyrically, we were discussing things that happened to us recently, whereas in the past we looked further back for inspiration. It's about 365 days in this band. It was a tough and strange journey. We happened to be in the middle of completing a full rotation musically as everything else was going on." Phish - Fuego (ATO) It's been almost five years since Phish had a new album of songs. Fuego is the band's twelfth studio album. The album's ten songs were premiered live by the band on Halloween 2013. Strand of Oaks - Heal (Dead Oceans) From the first bars of HEAL, the exhilarating melodic stomp of 'Goshen '97' puts you right into Tim Showalter's fervent teenage mindset. We find him in his family's basement den in Goshen, IN, feeling alienated but even at 15 years old, believing in the alchemy and power of music to heal your troubles. "The record is called HEAL, but it's not a soft, gentle healing, it's like scream therapy, a command, because I ripped out my subconscious, looked through it, and saw the worst parts. And that's how I got better." Playing at The Bishop on August 15th! A Sunny Day in Glasgow - Sea Went Absent (Lefse) Sea When Absent situates itself in the science fiction that is life in 2014 and goes looking for what new myths might speak to us in our post-Fukushima, post-quantum, post-everything world. Recorded over a year and a half with Jeff Zeigler (War On Drugs, Kurt Vile) at his Uniform Recording Studios in Philadelphia, the album is a conscious move away from the bright-dark, ambient maximalism of the band's acclaimed double LP, Ashes Grammar, and a move towards a post-millennial, up-front pop sound. Sea When Absent is simultaneously the band at their most accessible, most instant, and most rock. Black Bananas - Electric Brick Wall (Drag City) New album by the band led by Royal Trux's Jennifer Herrema. ELECTRIC BRICK WALL is the follow-up to the band's 2012 album RAD TIMES EXPRESS IV. They do it because it's fun and it sounds rad. Brave new pop and lock-roll, played on the guitar simulator, the digital saw, auto tune and the blues synth. Tomorrow's hits played through yesterday for us here in the now. Includes the single 'Physical Emotions'. How to Dress Well - What Is This Heart (Weird World) Since the release of his debut Love Remains in 2010 and the haunting, glacial neo-soul of 2012's Total Loss, Tom Krell under the moniker How To Dress Well - has crafted a reputation as one of America's most original, focused and beguiling young songwriters. Its twelve songs were conceived and written during months of grueling international touring and realized with producer Rodaidh McDonald (Vampire Weekend, The XX, Savages, Adele), and the result is an ambitious 21st century pop album. Edip Akbayram - s/t (Pharaway) Edip's a frail guy who spent his childhood unable to walk, but once he grew up he was on Istanbul TV in a whitey-fro and knee-length colored robes. Akbayram's voice is big & open, and it took him all across Turkey at the height of Anatolian psychedelia. This first album collects precious singles from 1972-74, with dark melodies that descend in loose spirals, seemingly forever. Tunes taken from mystic Sufi poets who played the baglama, but retro-fitted with hard-plowing electric bass lines, funky drums, fuzz-wah guitars and keys. Bassnectar - Noise vs Beauty (Amorphous) Noise vs Beauty: a 15 song journey which spans the spectrum of music from hardcore noise hysteria to lush, ethereal beauty and many points in between. Said Bassnectar, 'I collaborated with over 50 different human beings on this collection, and it is without a doubt my favorite album to date!' Including Seth Drake, Rye Rye, Hayley Gene, Jantsen, Fashawn & Zion I, TURSI, Jenna Sousa, Simon Morel, Amp Live, Lafa Taylor, The Upbeats. Claire - The Great Escape (Astralwerks) On Claires debut album, The Great Escape, the Munich-based five-piece offer up a wide swath of reference points electro, indie, pop, even some R&B resulting in a Technicolor hybrid of wistful, electronic, synthpop that is uniquely Claires own. The bands EP Broken Promise Land came out in fall 2013 featuring Games, a buoyant anthem to loves labors which went on to be remixed by Passion Pit and the title Broken Promise Land which was featured in a BMW campaign and was remixed by the godfather of synth-based music, Giorgio Moroder. Deadmau5 - while(1<2) (Universal) deadmau5 may have come to international prominence during the rise of electronic dance music, but musically he stands far apart from the scene that made him a superstar. While other producers collaborate with pop stars in hopes of climbing to the pinnacle of the Top 40, deadmau5 delivers beats and hooks that have filled stadiums, all while exploring the boundaries of electronic and dance music in the same way that groundbreaking artists like Richie Hawtin and Aphex Twin (Richard D James) did. The Duhks - Beyond the Blue (Compass) No band epitomizes the poly-ethnic strands of modern folk music better than The Duhks. Since forming in Winnipeg in 2001, The Duhks have created a dynamic blend of old-timey, French Canadian and Celtic music punched up with shades of blues, soul and driving Afro Cuban rhythms that leaves festival crowds on their feet. Over the course of four critically-acclaimed albums, the band has earned Juno and GRAMMY awards and nominations and have played a significant role in the neo-folk revival. Phox - s/t (Partisan) PHOX is a bunch of friends from the Midwestern circus hamlet, Baraboo, WI, a place where kids often drink poisoned groundwater and become endowed mutants. They make music that straddles Feist and Monty Python. PHOX beheld a demo reel of bedroom-recorded music that made Bon Iver and The Fray recording engineer Brian Joseph blush. Joseph produced the band's debut album at April Base Studios in Eau Claire, WI. Mixed by Michael Brauer at Electric Lady in NYC, their debut album is a school of simple folk-pop songs swimming amidst a chaotic eddy of rock, psychedelia, and soul. Speak - Pedals (Playing in Traffic) With roots in the dreamy pop of Radiohead and Sigur Ros, then the electronic pastiche of Beck and Cut Copy, the band received a crash course in rock while recording their first record with producer Frenchie Smith (The Dandy Warhols, Trail Of Dead, The Darkness), resulting in the multi-chromatic 2011 debut I Believe In Everything. Surrounding the release was an Austin Music Award for Best New Band in 2010 and appearances at SXSW, Voodoo, Austin City Limits, and Fun Fun Fun Festivals. The band has just wrapped their second, self-produced album Pedals, which continues to mine the vein between modern hip hop production, traditional song structure and melody, with the grittiness of rock n roll.
