We are wildly excited to announce THE CLEAN will be performing at the Bishop on Sunday August 17th. Yes, you read that right. The Clean, from New Zealand, featuring Hamish & David Kilgour and Robert Scott. Are you as surprised as we are that this is ACTUALLY HAPPENING? We can barely believe it either and we set it up! On sale NOW at Landlocked Music or online here. Do yourself a favor and don't miss this! Opening the show will be locals FULL SUN. To tie in with this amazing show, Landlocked is presenting a free screening of Heavenly Pop Hits - The Flying Nun Story at the Bishop on Sunday August 10th. This documentary tells the story of the legendary New Zealand-based Flying Nun music label up to its 21st birthday in 2007. The label became associated with the 'Dunedin Sound': a catch-all term for a sprawl of DIY, post-punk, warped, jangly guitar-pop. The bands featured on their roster, including The Clean, The Bats, The Verlaines and The Chills influenced countless future indie bands such as Pavement, Guided By Voices and Jay Reatard. The Guardian UK: "[it's] as if being on the other side of the world meant the music was played upside down". Features interviews with key players, the spats and the dark-but-breezy glory. Sunday August 10th at 8pm for FREE! New Arrivals for August 5th .................................................. Spoon - They Want My Soul (Loma Vista) Much anticipated new album from Austin, Texas band Spoon - their first since 2007, features the single, Rent I Pay. The highly regarded Dave Fridmann (Tame Impala, Flaming Lips, MGMT) has been drafted in on production duties, the first time the band has used an outside producer, and claims were made that They Want My Soul would be their "loudest and gnarliest" album to date. That may well be true. David Kilgour and The Heavy Eights - End Times Undone (Merge) A robust sampling of the styles Kilgour has mastered over the last three decades. For an album that comes so late in one's career, it's a surprisingly convenient entry point into Kilgour's body of work. After a psychedelic intro, opener "Like Rain" immediately identifies itself as vintage Kilgour, with shimmering guitars that gracefully swell and secede. "Lose Myself in Sound" will appeal to fans of The Clean who favor songs where the band chugs along on a blissful straightline path. While the album has its share of abstract lyrics, this title is one to take seriously. Bear in Heaven - Time Is Over One Day Old (Dead Oceans) Bear In Heaven's new album is aptly titled Time is Over One Day Old. It's a record with a visceral relationship to time and its processes. Where invulnerability and ambition can support you as you grow, at some point they become dead weight, and being true to yourself means casting them off, starting anew. This plays out as a powerful analogy for the band across the arc of it's career. Ben Miller Band - Any Way, Shape or Form (New West) Combining the urgency of rock and roll, the frenetic energy of bluegrass, the soul of the delta blues and the haunted spirit of Appalachian mountain music into a unique musical stew they dub Ozark Stomp, Ben Miller Band will release its first album for New West Records August 5th. Titled Any Way, Shape Or Form, it was produced by Vance Powell (Jack White, Kings of Leon, Wanda Jackson) at Sputnik Studios in Nashville. The Rosebuds - Sand + Silence (Western Vinyl) After spending 2 years living on opposite coasts and pursuing their own creative projects, Ivan Howard and Kelly Crisp came back together for their 6th album. Joining up with Bon Iver's Justin Vernon, the NC-bred duo spent a week in Vernon's studio teasing out a batch of songs that effortlessly weave the hooky songcraft of classic jangle-pop, the cagey romanticism of new wave, and a refined yet full-hearted sensibility all their own. Featuring Vernon on guitar and synths as well as Bon Iver drummer Matt McCaughan and Sylvan Esso's Nick Sanborn on bass. The resulting album radiates both a graceful intensity and the loose, joyful energy that comes from making music with friends. Spider Bags - Frozen Letter (Merge) Frozen Letter rocks with the clairvoyance of 3 musicians who have spent a lot of time recording and touring together over the last few years. Recorded mostly live over the course of a few days, there's an exhilarating urgency to the record, as heard in riff-driven rockers like "Back With You Again in the World" and "Chem Trails." The band brings the tempo down a notch for "Coffin Car," which finds them mining an ominous morbidity over one of their prettier chord patterns. "We Got Problems" comes on like a true acid trip, alternating between utter terror and unfettered joy. Featuring a heavy and repetitive pattern, a slew of effected guitars, and searing guest leads from Superchunk's Mac McCaughan, the song encapsulates an entire Spider Bags epoch in under 6 minutes. Christopher Denny - If the Roses Don't Kill Us (Partisan) A voice that will stop you in your tracks; a fervent Orbison meets Dylan tenor that fills his songs with a tremendous emotional pressure. It's the voice of a Southern choirboy who attended the church of alcohol, drugs and self-destruction in a failed attempt to deal with his inestimable inner pain and conflicts - his self-described "soft suicide". Denny has a gift for infusing simple words with raw sentiment and marrying them to haunting melodies over a blend of pre-country Southern music, folk, rock, gospel and singer/songwriter impulses, a style he calls Arkansas Soul. Appearing w/ Strand of Oaks at Russian Recording on Friday August 15th! The John Lurie National Orchestra - The Invention Of Animals (Amulet) John Lurie (actor, musician, visual artist) solidified this trio during his years touring and recording with The Lounge Lizards in the early 90s. Lurie says, 'The three of us got together to try and write stuff for the Lounge Lizards but what happened was magical. After about a year of playing live it really came together and I don't think there is anything like it.' Billy Martin adds, 'John and I share the idea that this is like someone discovered a field recording of some lost civilization. Some strange and beautiful tribe unlike any other known to man.' Most of Invention of Animals is a compilation of recordings during that period of extensive touring and recording for Fishing with John. Twin Peaks - Wild Onion (Grand Jury) Following last year's debut Sunken, the young Chicago psych band Twin Peaks return with a new LP, Wild Onion, via Grand Jury. The 16-track sophomore effort finds the band expanding on their fuzzy, garage-rock sensibilities. The new LP is loose, bright and punchy, while still employing much of the four-piece's raw edginess.
