Thank you Bloomington and beyond for you support and love for The Clean this past Sunday at the Bishop! This is a band and scene that Jason (and the LL crew) has loved for a long time, so this was a dream come true. And now you have another chance to live out some awesome rocknroll fantasies in 2 weeks when we welcome The Reigning Sound to town! Reigning Sound's principal member is Greg Cartwright. You may be familiar with some of the band's work, as this album is preceded by five studio LPs as well as numerous EPs and live records. Or perhaps some of Greg's other projects have been on your musical radar: The Oblivians, Parting Gifts, Compulsive Gamblers, 68 Comeback, Deadly Snakes, Detroit Cobras. Yea, pretty killer stuff. The new album was recorded at Daptone's Brooklyn studio. The recordings are warm and punchy, a mixed bag of rockers, ballads, and something in between. Join us again at The Bishop on Tuesday September 2nd for what will surely be one of the best rock shows of the year! Tickets available at LL or online here. What else? The return of Sunday-Sides Single Origin Coffee at Landlocked! Sunday August 31st sees the return of Uel Zing and Hopscotch along with a great big stack of wax for us to enjoy. We play full sides of new releases, you enjoy tasty beverages. Its win/win! Beyond that? Landlocked is sponsoring a FREE movie in Bryan Park: Flash Gordon (and its amazing soundtrack by Queen) will be shown on Friday September 5th at dusk (around 8:30). You should come! New Arrivals for August 19th .................................................. Apache Dropout - Heavy Windows (Magnetic South) After 3 LPs and a clutch of 45s, Bloomington's Apache Dropout have loosened an adherence to the divine mono sound and forged a scaly stereo technique for Heavy Window. This is a deeper, blown out swagger of peer-less rock n roll filtered through a lush three-dimensional spectrum. Just as their debut snapped heads back, they have proven again they can rescore the garage rock aesthetic and remain undisputed purveyors of true lysergic North American boogie. Sleeping Bag - Deep Sleep (Joyful Noise) On this Bloomington band's third LP, Dave Segedy has taken the band into heavier, more epic territory. The sunny jangling guitars and fun whistle choruses are gone; obliterated in a full on fuzz-guitar assault. Segedy's signature pop songwriting style is still in full effect, now brought to life by guitarist Tyler Smith and bassist Glenn Meyers. Tracks like "Hush" and "Wrestle" exemplify their honest, bedroom-pop approach and Malkmus-deadpan vocal delivery, but compared to the sunny disposition of the previous records, this sounds downright tuff. Drenched in distortion & reverb, the album culminates with an epic shred-fest, equal parts My Bloody Valentine & Weezer. Free bonus flexi 7" while they last! Electric Wurms - Musik, Die Shwer Zu Twerk (WB) A prog-rock side project featuring Flaming Lips' Steven Drozd on vocals, guitars, and keyboards and front man Wayne Coyne on bass and backed by Nashville psychedelic rock band Linear Downfall. Musik, Die Shwer Zu Twerk, will transport the listener into a new kind of transcendental orbit than one might expect from The Lips alone. Instead, these six velvety compositions appear to be harvested from a higher bardo plane of sound yet maintain a pleasantly familiar rock "experience" associated with The Lipsian-oeuvre. Bishop Allen - Lights Out (Dead Oceans) The new Bishop Allen record is here. Here's what went into it: 10 yrs, 3 full-lengths, 12 EPs, thousands of shows, a move out of Brooklyn, a new home in the wooly wilds of Kingston, NY, time off to score the films Bully and Mutual Friends, as well as an Anderson Cooper 360 special, months of demos, drum tracking in a sweat-lodge attic studio during a July heat wave, a wet Fall arranging guitars, bass, and synths in a now-chilly attic studio, the coldest December on record spent mixing, a close call with a frozen pipe and flooded hard drives, and a photo found on a friend's refrigerator. Benjamin Booker - s/t (ATO) Benjamin Booker is a young New Orleans based singer-songwriter. He is influenced by The Gun Club, Blind Willie Johnson, and T. Rex. Benjamin Booker's debut self-titled album, an album of what he calls "punk blues" inspired by his experiences with religion, relationships and friends in low places, was produced by Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes, Hurray For The Riff Raff). Cory Branan - No Hit Wonder (Bloodshot) Throughout his decade+ career, Cory has been too punk for country, too country for punk, too Memphis for Nashville, and probably a little too Cory Branan for anyone's good. He has proven himself as a top-notch songwriter (Chuck Ragan recently called him "the greatest songwriter of our generation"), fierce lyricist (in Lucero's "Tears Don't Matter Much" they sing that Cory has, "a way with words that'll bring you to your knees"), and a hyperdynamic performer with the ability to fingerpick finer than 60s Greenwich Village folkies and brutally strum like a proto punk shredder. The Brokeoffs - Restless Leg (Transdreamer) After finishing "All Her Fault" with Ms. Holly Golightly, our 7th full length album, I found myself with some extra time. I had been meaning to record some of my songs all by my lonesome for years but like many things in life, I never got around to it. "Restless Leg" was recorded at home, 6 acres in rural Georgia. A few songs were tracked in an empty stock trailer, some outside and the rest in a purpose built outbuilding that resembles a shed more than it does a studio. For the most part, the guitars, foot drums and vocals were tracked simultaneously with bass and homemade percussion layered in afterwards. AJ Davila - Terror Amor (Nacional) It's apparent that AJ must've concocted the brunt of the Puerto Rican punk band Davila 666's sound. It's all still there, if tweaked: the gang vocal sing-alongs, hooks heaved like teens playing Pollack with their guitars, and a sprightly energy like the Banana Splits brought back from the dead and given Oblivians records and coke of either manifestation. The melodies are sweetened, and the instrumentation allows for a little more air among the spilled-beer energy. Lo Que No Sera is a dancey, synth-laced glam pounder. 2333 is summertime driving home from the beach perfection. And by the time the middle of the album is being hand-clapped into the ceiling with Ohhh (No Te Encantes) and Es Verano Ya, AJ equals the stickiest Black Lips bubblegum bash-ups. Dr John - Ske-Dat-De-Dat: The Spirit of Satch (Concord) New Orleans' most prominent living musical icon. The embodiment of his hometown's freewheeling creative spirit and musical traditions, he's built a body of work that's deeply rooted in the Crescent City's myriad blues, R&B, jazz and rock traditions. So it's fitting that Ske-Dat-De-Dat pays heartfelt tribute to New Orleans legend Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong, whose musical innovations created the template for 20th-century jazz, and whose playful attitude and life-embracing spirit made him a beloved figure whose worldwide appeal transcended music. Featuring The Blind Boys of Alabama, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Anthony Hamilton, Bonnie Raitt, Terence Blanchard and many more. JJ - V (Secretly Canadian) Their debut single enchanted the music press, simultaneously existing across indie-pop and hip-hop spectrums, excitingly new and yet frustratingly vague in its presentation. The music was here, but its makers remained anonymous. Pitchfork's Best New Music review for their debut album spoke first of their enigmatic qualities, rather than precisely what this music was: another sumptuous menagerie of styles, blended by an expert hand, intoxicating and otherworldly. At the top of their game, JJ are ready to "communicate with the world," quite unlike they've ever done so before. They're embracing, not retreating. Besides, mysteries are more frustrating than fascinating without resolution. Bahamas - Bahamas is Afie (Brushfire) The new release is the first self-produced album from the Ontario-based musician. With this record he pursued a far more complex sound than on prior releases and is responsible for the majority of the instrumentation. The album follows 2011's Barchords, which was praised for being a reserved yet melodically rewarding exploration of relationships and heartache by The New Yorker. SPIN recently premiered a track from the album, saying Bahamas distills his brand of breezy soul... with summer-ready falsetto harmonies that float over a distorted riff, before ending with a quick solo, a move that reminds this laidback Canuck can shred. The Posies - Failure [reissue] (Omnivore) Failure contains the original 12 songs, plus hard to find bonus material, plus 1 track recently located in The Posies' extensive archives. The booklet contains press clippings and essays from 1988, as well as updated messages from McCaughey and the band. This 2014 edition sees the original 12-track playlist restored and available on vinyl for the first time since its original issue. VA - Look Again To The Wind: Johnny Cash's Bitter Tears Revisited (Sony) Of all the albums released by Johnny Cash, 1964's Bitter Tears is among the closest to the artist's heart. A concept album focusing on the mistreatment of the Native American people throughout the history of the US, it spoke in frank and poetic language of the hardships and intolerance they endured. Now, a collective of artists has come together to update these songs. The album features music giants Kris Kristofferson, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Bill Miller, Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, and Norman Blake (the only surviving member from the original recordings) as well as up-and-comers like Milk Carton Kids and Rhiannon Giddens. The Fat White Family - Champagne Holocaust (Fat Possum) They've been described as "Britain's most depraved, volatile, and unpredictable band" and "genuinely, thrillingly, disturbing" by the UK music critics and were recently awarded NME's Radar Award for best new band. The album is a mix of class war, surrealism, odes to auto sex and to sex in autos, calls for full scale insurrection, unabashed sleaze and grooves that will just not let up. "Raw-assed rabble rock as dark, deviant & disgusting as the 70s" - NME Ruthie Foster - Promise of a Brand New Day (Blue Corn) Twice Grammy Nominated Ruthie Foster's music spans the breadth of Blues, Soul, Folk, and Reggae. Her voice is a powerful force of nature. "Her ability to move so effortlessly between moods from tender to fierce and to place a personal stamp on so many different types of songs marks Foster as one of the most remarkable song stylists performing today." - Living Blues Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas - Secret Evil (Instant) This Detroit-based band serves up a brilliantly polyglot sonic stew equal parts rockabilly and surf pop, cabaret jazz and funky reggae, Latin psych and Gypsy punk all cooked up on the hot Motor City pavement and seasoned by that distinctly Detroit combination of blasted R&B, showband theatrics, and limitless rock n soul energy.
