Don't miss this! Reigning Sound on Tuesday September 2nd at the Bishop! Reigning Sound's principal member is Greg Cartwright. Perhaps some of Greg's other projects have been on your musical radar: The Oblivians, Parting Gifts, Compulsive Gamblers, 68 Comeback, Deadly Snakes, Detroit Cobras. Yea, pretty killer stuff. The new album was recorded at Daptone's Brooklyn studio. The recordings are warm and punchy, a mixed bag of rockers, ballads, and something in between. Join us at The Bishop on Tuesday September 2nd for what will surely be one of the best rocknroll shows of the year! Tickets available at LL or online here. What else? The return of Sunday-Sides Single Origin Coffee at Landlocked! Sunday August 31st sees the return of Uel Zing and Hopscotch along with a great big stack of wax for us to enjoy. We play full sides of new releases, you enjoy tasty beverages. Its win/win! Beyond that? Landlocked is sponsoring a FREE movie in Bryan Park: Flash Gordon (and its amazing soundtrack by Queen) will be shown on Friday September 5th at dusk (around 8:30). You should come! New Arrivals for August 26th .................................................. Ty Segall - Manipulator (Drag City) Sticking his hand deeper into the machines all around him, Ty is reaching ever further to the outer limits of inner space orbited throughout Twins and Sleeper. And now more than ever, the chunks of the world that came before are like asteroids formed in his image, picking up speed. Still fighting the power with all the energy that a determined mind-patriot can conjure, Ty's a fighter who loves, a surfer, a spaceman, and yeah, a casualty like you, he'll never be free. But unlike you, he knows it and when he goes down and his head cracks in two, out pour the multi-colored manias that make up Manipulator. New Pornographers - Brill Bruisers (Matador) Brill Bruisers is the first new release in 4 years from the supergroup The New Pornographers, who NPR calls "virtually peerless in the world of power-pop and indie-rock." Stereogum proclaims, "In recent history, no group has featured so much formidable established talent, collaborating on a regular basis." "This is a celebration record," in the words of singer AC Newman, and that describes it perfectly - massively melodic, joyous pop music helmed by the soaring vocals of Neko Case, Dan Bejar (Destroyer) and Newman himself. Not since Twin Cinema has the band sounded so deliriously, goofily happy. J Mascis - Tied to a Star (Sub Pop) J's Tied to a Star is the follow up to his acclaimed Sub Pop debut Several Shades of Why. The album, led by the songs "Every Morning" and "Wide Awake," was recorded and produced by Mascis and mixed by John Agnello at Bisquiteen in Amherst, MA. Tied to a Star also features guest appearances from musicians Ken Maiuri, Pall Jenkins (Black Heart Procession), Mark Mulcahy (Miracle Legion) and Chan Marshall (Cat Power). Shovels & Rope - Swimmin Time (Dualtone) Swimmin' Time is Shovels & Rope's follow-up to their acclaimed 2012 album O' Be Joyful. "Birmingham" (the number one song on American Songwriter's year-end list) and the rest of O' Be Joyful put Shovels & Rope on the larger stage in many ways from an appearance on Letterman to an acclaimed set on PBS' Austin City Limits and festival slots at Coachella, Bonnaroo, Sasquatch, Newport Folk Festival, Lollapalooza and ACL. Playing at the Bluebird on October 7th! Basement Jaxx - Junto (PIAS) Basement Jaxx blew the lid off the dance music scene of the late 90s with their albums "Remedy," "Rooty" and "Kish Kash." Each of these records produced monster singles such as "Red Alert," "Where Your Head At" and "Good Luck" that crossed over from dance to pop audiences and led to the band winning a Grammy. "Junto" is a bold, boisterous album full of amazing guest vocal performances, richly layered production and the irresistible sense of groove that has set them apart from the very beginning. Deluxe 2xCD features 12 bonus tracks including album remixes and unreleased songs. The Bug - Angels and Devils (Ninja Tune) The latest offering from the The Bug escapes the London cage, drawing on it for influence yet blowing it up into a world-view now seen from Kevin Martin's new Berlin home. Both a year zero reset and a continuation of what has been. Like the Bowie/Eno classic Low, or Can's Tago Mago, the album is split into 2 distinct themes and explorations of light & dark. Bringing the angel & devil voices together under a single banner. Cold Specks - Neuroplasticity (Mute) The 26 year-old Canadian singer, under the sobriquet Al Spx, began work on the new album while holed-up in a cottage in Wick, Somerset during the winter of 2012. "In retrospect, I probably didn't choose the most ideal season to live there," she deadpans. I may have been reflecting on my surroundings." Recorded at Montreal’s Hotel2Tango and Toronto’s Revolution Recordings studios, the album was produced by Jim Anderson and mixed by Anderson and Ben Hillier (Blur, Depeche Mode). Features a duet w/ M Gira. Cymbals Eat Guitars - Lose (Barsuk) "This is a raucous affair, an Irish Wake, ultimately rooted in nothing less than a celebration of just being alive. I think this one is obviously more accessible than the others," says D'Agostino, referring to the band's first two LPs, their debut having been awarded Pitchfork's coveted Best New Music. "The first two had a lot more stop and start," he continues. "This one has a ton of momentum. It's got fluidity and grace. I think I gave the lyrics more room to breathe, so you can kind of follow what's going on." Dry the River - Alarms in the Heart (Transgressive) London quartet who have drawn comparisons to Mumford & Sons, Fleet Foxes and Band of Horses - was formed as a solo vehicle for Norwegian born singer Peter Liddle, who described the band's sound as "Folky gospel music played by a post-punk band." These new songs are at turns anthemic, cerebral and irrestistible. Peter's mellifluous, choral voice blends effortlessly with chiming guitars and stirring rhythms and additional emotional resonance is provided by arrangements from Valgeir Sigurosson (Sigur Ros, Bjork). FKA Twigs - LP1 (Young Turks) FKA twigs is a London-based producer, singer, and classically trained ballerina. Although Twigs (as her friends call her) has only officially released 2 EPs to date, she has racked up more than 6 million Youtube views for her assorted videos - 2.5 million on the video for "Water Me" alone. Her debut record showcases her songwriting and production talents and is set to be one of 2014's most anticipated debuts. Floating Action - Body Questions (New West) Hailing from the small town of Black Mountain, NC Seth Kauffman channels the collective creative energy that has been birthed & transferred between the mountains of the Swannanoa Valley. For his 6th proper studio album Kauffman holed up in his own tiny studio & took from his experiences working with luminaries such as Dan Auerbach & Jim James and built upon them to further challenge his own style and sound by creating his most advanced work to date. The Griswolds - Be Impressive (Wind Up) The word indie pop gets thrown around reasonably frequently these days and sometimes perhaps a little liberally. Not so here. These guys seem crafted for FM alternative radio, but take the fun, fashionable pop component relatively far without sounding immediately commercial. With heaps of synth and guitar, everything is glossy and well produced courtesy of Tony Hoffer (Beck, Ladyhawke, Air), and there is a positivity to the tracks that make you want to keep listening, if only to hear what is coming next from this Sydney quartet. Merchandise - After the End (4AD) After The End was recorded and produced by the band, in the house they share in Tampa. The only outside influence came when they enlisted mixing help from Gareth Jones - the man famed for his work with Depeche Mode, Erasure, Nick Cave, and more recently Interpol, These New Puritans and Grizzly Bear. Speaking to NME earlier this year, Carson Cox said "(Our last album) Totale Nite was the end of the book. This is a whole new one. It's like we can start a new band with basically the same name. We've already exploded our reality - now we're going to remake ourselves as a pop band, but it'll still be a twisted reality." MNDSGN - Yawn Zen (Stones Throw) Ringgo Ancheta is an anomaly among hip-hop producers - not raised in the suburbs on a steady diet of video games and hip-hop, but in the forest like a beast. His parents were members of the Philippine arm of the Aum Supreme Truth Cult, whose venture into terrorist activity caused them to flee the group to the US in the late 80s. He describes one of his earliest excursions of his own into the modern world, when he hitchhiked to Philly. "The first guy I met on the street introduced me to the world of music and beat making. Within a day I was making my own beats on his sampler." Opeth - Pale Communion (Roadrunner) Pale Communion was produced by the band's very own Mikael Akerfeldt and mixed by longtime collaborator and Porcupine Tree frontman Steven Wilson. The new material finds Opeth once again challenging the boundaries of extreme music. Rentals - Lost In Alphaville (Polyvinyl) Lost In Alphaville is a true sonic achievement, The Rentals' best album by a mile, a blissfully righteous storm of broken-up guitars, buzz-saw synths, brutally barbaric rhythms which crumble and crackle against a wash of strings, male & female voices- all blending into 10 perfectly formed pop songs. Not only have The Rentals completely surpassed their first 2 albums, but Sharp just might be putting forward the best work of his entire career. Royal Blood - s/t (WB) Royal Blood is a mixture of anguished vocals, ferocious drumming and bass that provides intricate detail as well as a rumble of rhythm. The sound is a result of a lineage that stretches from present day heroes Queens of the Stone Age to Led Zep, and all the way back to early blues pioneers... yet this huge wall of sound emerges from just two members. Rubblebucket - Survival Sounds (Communion) "Joyous jungles of worldly pop-funk, instrumentally rich but catchy enough to ass-kick Katy Perry off the pop charts (in a just world) - mega-melodic without sacrificing an ounce of atmosphere or creativity." - Paste. The album was produced and mixed by John Congleton (St Vincent, Modest Mouse, David Byrne) and recorded at Mission Sound in Brooklyn. Rustie - Green Language (Warp) Rustie returns with a development and testament to his true passions and influences, the album is a high energy 40 minutes that showcases his signature sound at new found heights. It's a mediation on everything from grime and hip-hop to sci-fi computer games and even prog rock. Green Language features guests such as Danny Brown, D Double E and Redinho. The Wytches - Annabel Dream Reader (Partisan) Led by Kristian Bell's luminous lyricism and feral delivery, Brighton's Wytches create a sound that is at once raucous and unruly, yet decorated with authentic emotional clout. Although he draws more from singer-songwriters (Elliott Smith, Leonard Cohen) than specific bands, the trio's debut LP sees them accomplish a dark and heady sound that embraces the black arts and the more extreme limits of rock without being prescriptively macabre. Far from it all at once they reference surf, grunge, metalcore and spy movie scores, as Bell turns his voice into an instrument in its own right. Playing at the Bishop on Nov 18th. The Young - Chrome Cactus (Matador) In Chrome Cactus, The Young have created a HUGE sounding, timeless rock album that reinforces and revitalizes everything that is great about American Rock Music in 2014. Taking influence from early ZZ Top, Link Wray, Lungfish, Dead Moon - Chrome Cactus is a ball of power and controlled feedback disguised as ten of the catchiest songs you'll hear.
