Landlocked Music Presents: Reigning Sound - TONIGHT at the Bishop! Reigning Sound's principal member is Greg Cartwright. Perhaps some of Greg's other projects have been on your musical radar: The Oblivians, Parting Gifts, Compulsive Gamblers, 68 Comeback, Deadly Snakes, Detroit Cobras. Their new album was recorded at Daptone's Brooklyn studio. The recordings are warm and punchy, a mixed bag of rockers, ballads, and something in between. Join us at The Bishop on Tuesday September 2nd for what will surely be one of the best rocknroll shows of the year! Tickets still available at LL or online here. Don't forget! Landlocked is sponsoring a FREE movie in Bryan Park: Flash Gordon (and its amazing soundtrack by Queen) will be shown this coming Friday September 5th at dusk (around 8:30). You should come! New Arrivals for September 2nd .................................................. Earth - Primitive and Deadly (Southern Lord) The mighty Earth will return with their 10th album. This time round, core member Dylan Carlson and long-term drummer Adrienne Davies have allowed themselves to be a rock band. What's revealed is that the group's heavyweight instrumentals have now been adorned with vocals from gravel-voiced bluesman Mark Lanegan and Rabia Shaheen Qazi of Rose Windows. Other guests on the LP include Bill Herzog of Sunn O))), Brett Netson of Built To Spill, and Jodie Cox of Narrows. Game Theory - Blaze of Glory (Omnivore) Blaze Of Glory, originally released in 1982, was the first music from Scott Miller and company, after an album and EP fronting Alternate Learning. It showed the beginnings of the power-pop mixed with new-wave sensibilities the band would become known for and even hints at the upcoming Paisley Underground sound that would take California by storm. Mastered from the original tapes and featuring a booklet with rare photos, an essay from manager Dan Vallor and remembrances from band members and colleagues. God Help the Girl - s/t OST (Milan) God Help The Girl is a musical feature film, written and directed by Stuart Murdoch, lead singer of the group Belle & Sebastian. It was produced by Barry Mendel and stars Emily Browning, Olly Alexander and Hannah Murray. The film was shot, edited, scored and mixed in Glasgow. Did we mention there are two screenings of this film in town this month? On 9/11 and 9/25 at IU Cinema, of course! The first 3 people to buy the soundtrack on CD or LP get a free pass for 2 to either screening as well as a poster and button! Half Japanese - Overjoyed (Joyful Noise) The first album in 13 years from legendary band Half Japanese. Jad Fair and Half Japanese helped spearheaded the DIY and lo-fi movements, influencing countless bands such as Sonic Youth, Neutral Milk Hotel, Daniel Johnston, and perhaps most notably, Kurt Cobain (who ranked Half Japanese amongst his top 50 favorites, had them open the In Utero tour, and was wearing their T-shirt when he died). Recorded & produced by John Dieterich of Deerhoof. Blonde Redhead - Barragan (Kobalt) Formed in 1993, Blonde Redhead have never made records for fame, or for money, or to ape their teenage heroes, or to indulge any of the dumb, ephemeral impulses that clog up the blogosphere with dumb, ephemeral music. They make music, simply, because they have to. Barragan is ambitious. Tracks like Dripping, The One I Love, and Defeatist Anthem have all the emotional punches of previous high water marks in the band's repertoire - they just feel slightly less calculated, more serendipitous. Harald Grosskopf - Synthesist (Bureau B) Manuel Gottsching and Harald knew each other from the burgeoning Berlin electronic scene and recording sessions for the likes of Ash Ra Tempel. Gottsching invited Grosskopf to sign up for his new project Ashra and the rest is history: Ashra released a series of successful albums in the years that followed. It was not until the summer of 1979, however, that he finally felt ready to release a solo album. His melodies, carried along by synthesizers and drums, were reminiscent of works by Berlin electronic friends such as Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream, as well as those 'cosmic' sessions of the early 70s. Synthesist is regarded as a classic by electronic music enthusiasts all over the world, evoking a thrilling musical era of the past with equal capacity to excite today. Code Orange - I Am King (Deathwish) New album from Code Orange (formerly Code Orange Kids). Title track 'I Am King' shifts from 'heavy' to 'hard to define' through the use of unorthodox guitar work/percussion and chaotic structure. While others wear an art-rock crown while claiming a metallic throne. It's not just melodious experimentation though, other tracks show the band reimagining what aggressive music can be. Elevating and expanding what can be done within the confines of it without leaving it behind entirely. RIYL: Neurosis, Converge, Terror, Cursed, Circles Takes the Square. Anthony D'Amato - The Shipwreck From The Shore (New West) The NYC-based songwriter is growing from his early homespun self-recorded solo acoustic work to a more ambitious, full-band sound. The album was recorded at The Great North Sound Society, an 18th Century farmhouse-turned-studio deep in the woods of Maine, and features Matt McCaughan (Bon Iver) on drums, Brad Cook (Megafaun) on bass, and Sam Kassirer's rich production. Homeboy Sandman - Hallways (Stones Throw) Hallways is Sandman's sophomore album off the heels of a series of mini releases that were widely celebrated. A rapper with a penchant for weaving witticism into even his most serious messages, Rolling Stone branded him as an "artist to watch." He has been featured in preeminent print hip-hop rags XXL and The Source, and perpetually championed on foremost online hubs. Mutual Benefit - The Cowboy's Prayer (Other) Previously available only as a download, Cowboy's Prayer was the real introduction of the lush orchestral folk sound that many first heard on Mutual benefit's breakthrough "Love's Crushing Diamond" LP. This EP has been remastered and is available in physical formats for the first time, with all new artwork, as a gorgeous one-sided etched 45 rpm 12" and CD. First 2 people to purchase this lil honey get a FREE pair of tix to the show at the Bishop on 9/27! Les Ambassadeurs - Motel de Bamako (Sterns Africa) The supernal singer Salif Keita, guitarists Kante Manfila, Ousmane Kouyate and Amadou Bagayoko (now famous as half of Amadou & Mariam), saxophonist Moussa Sissoko, organist Idrissa Soumaoro, and the extraordinary xylophonist & fiddler Keletigui Diabate - were all in the great West African band called Les Ambassadeurs. They came together from several bands from 4 different countries (hence their name) in Bamako, Mali, in 1970. They immediately created a sensation with their skill at various styles, including Afro-Cuban, jazz, R&B, rock, and modernized Mande classics. Honey Radar - Chain Smoking on Easter (Third Uncle) First official LP from these Indiana-to-Philly transplants, this is the most concentrated dose yet of Honey Radar's unique take on lo-fi pop. Fronted by longtime Elephant Micah sideman Jason Henn, the group has issued a stream of poppy, shambolic 7", CDR, and tape releases for the past several years and recently earned accolades from Tiny Mix Tapes, Impose, Dynamite Hemorrhage, and The Wire, drawing comparisons to everything from the Clean to the Byrds. Johnny Winter - Step Back (Megaforce) Step Back features an amazing list of musical guests and takes Johnny back to a more aggressive style of blues...one that helped shape the musical icon. Artists featured on this album are Eric Clapton, Billy Gibbons, Joe Perry, Ben Harper, Joe Bonamassa, Leslie West, Jason Ricci, Dr. John, Blues Brothers Horns & More! RIP Johnny.
