OK, so we know it sounds odd, but, cassette tapes are making a small comeback. They are portable, sturdy, compact, inexpensive, and well, lots of people have tape decks in their cars, kitchen boomboxes, etc. In celebration of the little format that could, a day has been born for cassette lovers, this Saturday September 27th! We will have some awesome new tapes for sale as well as our always impressive tape wall. Featured titles include: Zero Boys, R Stevie Moore, TMBG, Mutual Benefit, Wooden Wand, Townes Van Zandt, Andrew Jackson Jihad, The Hussy, and many more - stop by on Saturday and check it out! We will be playing lots of tapes and maybe a few surprises too. ** New Arrivals for September 23rd ------------------------------------------------------------ ** Tweedy - Sukierae (Anti) ------------------------------------------------------------ Tweedy, the band, is a collaboration between Jeff Tweedy, the founder of Wilco, and his 18-year-old son and drummer Spencer Tweedy. Sukierae features 20 new songs penned by Jeff, performed by father and son along with a host of musical guests. "When I set out to make this record, I imagined it being a solo thing, but not in the sense of one guy strumming an acoustic guitar and singing," Jeff said. "Solo to me meant that I would do everything- write the songs, play all the instruments and sing. But Spencer's been with me from the very beginning demo sessions, playing drums and helping the songs take shape." ** Aphex Twin - Syro (Warp) ------------------------------------------------------------ In case you hadn't noticed, the gurning genius is back in a big way with 'Syro', his first new LP since 'Drukqs' (2001). Culled from his legendary trove of recordings, it's apparently "about a fifth" of what he's done in the last 10 years, "…one album out of many possible ones", according to his interview with Rolling Stone. The sound is somewhere between 'Drukqs' and the Analord series of 2005 - leaning heavy on trademark breakbeat funk and hyper-jazzy / classical arrangements for the most, and saving one saunter into pastoral piano realms for the vinegar strokes of 'aisatsana'. ** Bonnie Prince Billy - Singer's Grave a Sea of Tongues (Drag City) ------------------------------------------------------------ Just to make things clear: this might be a new record by Bonnie but the songs are (mostly) not. It is the result of a session that Will Oldham did with a lot of guest musicians in which they revisited the songs of 2011's Wolfroy Goes To Town. Some songs get fired up a bit, others get drenched in a more brooding atmosphere. Limited vinyl version includes a bonus album of songs not on the CD! ** John Mellencamp - Plain Spoken (Republic) ------------------------------------------------------------ At 62, John has spent his nearly 40-year career figuring out exactly where he fits in the American grain, and he’s never inhabited traditional folk and blues-imbued settings as personally as on his 22nd album. Singing with gruff directness, the recent divorce deals with relationship struggles, as well as broader societal and moral worry. He recorded the album in Indiana with executive production by T Bone Burnett, who has brought his stripped-down approach to Mellencamp’s recent albums. "I don't trust myself, I don't trust you," he intones darkly. It’s a lonely old night, as he used to sing, and a raw one. ** Perfume Genius - Too Bright (Matador) ------------------------------------------------------------ Over the course of two astonishing albums, Perfume Genius, aka Seattle native Mike Hadreas, cemented his place as a singer-songwriter of rare frankness, creating songs that, while achingly emotional, offered empathy and hope, rather than any judgment or handwringing. Sparse, gorgeous and with Hadreas quavering vocals often only accompanied by piano, they were uncommonly beautiful tales of a life lived on the dark side scarred, brutalised, yet ultimately, slowly but surely reclaimed. ** Alt-J - This Is All Yours (Atlantic) ------------------------------------------------------------ Alt-J are a four piece that met while attending Leeds University in the UK. This Is All Yours was recorded in Spring 2014 with the same producer / engineer (Charlie Andrew) and studio that yielded alt-J's million-selling Mercury Prize-winning debut record, An Awesome Wave. ** Julian Casablancas + the Voidz - Tyranny (Kobalt) ------------------------------------------------------------ Through his work with The Strokes, to his first solo album, to his recent collaboration with Daft Punk, Julian remains a musical visionary and creative force. Over the past 4 years, Julian + The Voidz have come together through music connections and friends in NYC and LA via their love of beat driven, aggressive music with the power of modern harmonies to make it catchy and powerful. A punk band that can play and style of music, they take pride in their versatility. ** Leonard Cohen - Popular Problems (Columbia) ------------------------------------------------------------ Leonard's thrilling new album takes us down into the avenues of our dreams and sets a new tone and speed of hope and despair, grief and joy. Cohen here is an astonished lover rocking to the human condition as "the soul unfolds in the chambers of its longing." His legendary basso resonates with a presence and urgency that arises from the very depths of the heart. His 13th studio album, released just two days after his 80th birthday. ** King Tuff - Black Moon Spell (Sub Pop) ------------------------------------------------------------ Black Moon Spell is the new album from Los Angeles-based rock outfit, King Tuff, who are long-adored for their tight, anthemic songs and enigmatic leader, King Tuff (aka Kyle Thomas). Black Moon Spell recalls rock heroes such as Thin Lizzy, T-Rex and Alice Cooper, along with the inimitable blend of punk and power-pop that defined King Tuff's previous two albums. Loser Edition LPs include a patch. ** Goat - Commune (Sub Pop) ------------------------------------------------------------ Commune is the new album from the Swedish psychedelic collective, Goat. Known for their intense, ritualistic live shows, Goat's hypnotic, 2012 debut, World Music, received widespread acclaim and placed in many of that year's top-10 lists. Preceded by the single "Hide from the Sun", Commune is Goat's first album for Sub Pop Records. Loser Edition LPs include a bonus 7" ** Pugwash - A Rose in the Garden of Weeds (Omnivore) ------------------------------------------------------------ Pugwash's mix of The Beach Boys meets ELO meets XTC has made them favorites in not only their homeland of Ireland, but across the UK. Everywhere else, the Pugwash fan base grows as listeners discover the group's work with contributors like Andy Partridge & Dave Gregory of XTC, Jason Falkner (Jellyfish), and Divine Comedy's Neil Hannon. ** Dntel - Human Voice (Stones Throw) ------------------------------------------------------------ Postal Service member Jimmy Tamborello, brings us his solo project Dntel. "Human Voice" is emotive electronic voices that rise up like vapor. As a pioneer of contemporary glitch and electronica, Dntel remains a cult figure. ** The Drums - Encyclopedia (Minor) ------------------------------------------------------------ The Drums often explore the themes of loss, nostalgia, redemption, vulnerability, and love - with critic's raves embracing both the lyrics and their sonic signature. This time around, they've embraced a darker sound while making it as grand and majestic as they please. Its full of 'magic and surprise while maintaining a serious, more weighty tone throughout.' The LP marks the first time in years that they were left to their own devices, without having to ask a soul for approval. The result is an exciting display of personal emotion and unashamed, majestic songwriting style. ** The Growlers - Chinese Fountain (Everloving) ------------------------------------------------------------ You can hone in on some influences baked into the work of this California-bred band. But once those same RIYL tags have been filtered through the minds and hands and voices of the band, there's simply nothing else like it. The 11 songs found on it are some of the strongest that they've committed to tape yet; a byproduct of 8 years in the trenches together finely honing their gypsy folk dirges and psychedelic sea shanties to fans around the world. ** Empires - Orphan (Chop Shop) ------------------------------------------------------------ Produced by John Congleton (St Vincent, Cloud Nothings, War on Drugs, Explosions in the Sky), Orphan is a collection of songs immersed in classic post punk and indie circa 1989-1991, exploring the sonic adventurers and emotional heft of artists such as Roxy Music, Wire, and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. Throughout the album, singer Sean Van Vleet's raw croon rises to match the band's musicality, conveying anxieties, secrets, and a heartfelt longing for transcendence. ** Mapei - Hey Hey (Downtown) ------------------------------------------------------------ The debut by Swedish-American recording artist Mapei, heralds the arrival of a major new voice across hip-hop, electronic and pop. Leading with the single "Don't Wait," which has been praised by NPR, Vogue and Pitchfork in addition to appearing on numerous TV shows, Hey Hey presents a positive outlook with a sense of songcraft that many have compared to Lauryn Hill. The album has already been recommended by Adele, Diplo, Tegan & Sara, Sebastian of Swedish House Mafia and more. ** S - Cool Choices (Hardly Art) ------------------------------------------------------------ The long-running solo project of Jenn Ghetto (Carissa's Wierd). After many months of trying to get their schedules aligned, the band ended up in the studio with Chris Walla (Death Cab for Cutie) in Seattle. As he was setting up Ghetto's guitar amp combo and pulling gadgets off the shelves and microphones out of boxes he said to her, "This is how you make a Van Halen record." ** Whirr - Sway (Graveface) ------------------------------------------------------------ With their steady ebb and flow of warm, effects-laden sounds, northern California's, Whirr, give the sounds of 90s shoegaze a widescreen update for the post-millennial era. The young sextet's walls of lush guitars, breathy vocals, dreamy synth, and thunderous drumming propel listening ears into a near-cinematic realm where instantly catchy melodies and emotional, enveloping atmospheres hang perfectly in the balance. ** Tape & Vinyl & Print Zone ------------------------------------------------------------ Boris With Merzbow - Sun Baked Snow Cave LP (Hydra Head) Budos Band - Burnt Offering 7" (Daptone) Crystal Voyager - s/t OST LP (Anthology Surf Archive) Drums - Magic Mountain 7" (Minor) Donny Hathaway - Best of LP (Friday) Fleetwood Mac - Mr Wonderful [LP reissue] (Blue Horizon) Hudson Mohawke - Chimes 12" (Warp) Ibeyi - Oya 12" (XL) ** Also Released This Week ------------------------------------------------------------ Danny Bland & Greg Dulli - I Apologize In Advance [book] (Sub Pop) Joe Bonamassa - Different Shades Of Blue (J&R) Broncho - Just Enough Hip To Be Woman (Dine Alone) Gary Clark Jr - Live (WB) Dan'l Boone - s/t (Drag City) Erasure - The Violet Flame 2CD (Mute) Family Ruin - Dearly Departed (KBB) George Harrison - reissues/box (Apple) Marketa Irglova - Muna (Anti) Jerry Lee Lewis - The Knox Phillips Sessions: Unreleased Recordings (Saguaro) The Lickers - Get Licker'd (self) Louis CK - Oh My God (Vagrant) Lower Plenty - Life / Thrills (Mexican Summer) Imelda May - Tribal (Verve) Neulore - Animal Evolve (Chop Shop) Chuck Prophet - Night Surfer (Yep Roc) Purling Hiss - Weirdon (Drag City) Laetitia Sadier - Something Shines (Drag City) Sarah Silverman - We Are Miracles (Sub Pop) Trapt - The Acoustic Collection (Crash Collide) Lee Ann Womack - Way I'm Livin (Sugar Hill) ** Upcoming Concerts ------------------------------------------------------------ Hey out-of-towners and home-bodies!
