Welcome to Autumn! Lets have another instore, shall we? Sunday, October 26th (http://www.facebook.com/events/1503136373259809/) - we welcome back to our stage LILY & MADELEINE (http://www.facebook.com/events/1503136373259809/) for a free, all-ages show to celebrate the release of their brand new CD/LP, Fumes, out on Asthmatic Kitty two days early at this record release performance! ** New Arrivals for September 23rd ------------------------------------------------------------ ** Lucinda Williams - Down Where The Spirit Meets The Bone (Highway 20) ------------------------------------------------------------ The first album in 4 years features 20 new songs. As expected, there are intimate moments that cut to the core as well as some of the fullest arrangements Lucinda has recorded. There are extended performances by an incedible list of guests that include guitarists Bill Frissell, Tony Joe White & Stuart Mathis, Ian McLagan, Jakob Dylan, as well as Elvis Cosetllo's famed rhythm section of Pete Thomas & Davey Faragahe. ** Gui Boratto - Abaporu (Kompakt) ------------------------------------------------------------ Brazilian groove architect Gui Boratto is back with an exotic and colorful journey into sound, spread over 13 richly-orchestrated club tracks that display the same penchant for ridiculously catchy melodies and infectious rhythms that already informed his revered debut Chromophobia. Gui strings together various contemporary strands of pop-infused techno and house and translates them into his very own stream of groove consciousness. ** The Juan MacLean - In a Dream (DFA) ------------------------------------------------------------ The Juan MacLean have weathered electroclash, disco-punk, electro-disco, techno, house, deep house, and whatever we can call the sound of today. They never feel totally in step with the moment, but somehow always feel right and necessary. Nancy's voice has always been a kind of secret weapon on Juan Maclean records, but this album is her triumph. These are all love songs, but emotions run wild. And you can't pull this off without Nancy - she's not living in these songs, she's leading them. ** Rural Alberta Advantage - Mended With Gold (Saddle Creek) ------------------------------------------------------------ The ideas and moods created in these songs tie back to the album title, Mended With Gold, embracing the idea that breakage and repair of an object becomes part of its unique history and ultimately makes it more valuable instead of a blemish to disguise. The Rural Alberta Advantage have taken all of their successes, losses, adventures, and heartbreaks of the past, and forged them together into an unforgettably powerful work of beauty. Tons of free goodies with purchase! ** Sinkane - Mean Love (DFA) ------------------------------------------------------------ This is truly universal soul music, uniting rhythm and styles from our world over to help you move, relate and BE. From Ahmed Gallab's childhood in Sudan there is a Pan-African influence of popular Sudanese music and haqibah, as well as distinct horn and synth arrangements more common to East Africa. This background merges with the lessons learned from Ahmed's stints with obsessive craftsmen such as Caribou, Yeasayer and Of Montreal. ** Alice Gerrard - Follow the Music (Tompkins Square) ------------------------------------------------------------ This trailblazing folk singer famously collaborated with Hazel Dickens. Their classic recordings for Folkways and Rounder in the 60s and 70s rank among the most influential recordings in folk music history, and laid the groundwork for many artists, especially female bluegrass and folk musicians. The album features traditional tunes and original songs, and is produced by Hiss Golden Messenger's M.C. Taylor. "Alice has one of those voices that harkens back to the likes of Sara and Maybelle. She is the real deal with the right stuff and hasn't forgotten where country music came from." - Emmylou Harris ** Electric Youth - Innerworld (Secretly Canadian) ------------------------------------------------------------ With their swooning collaboration with College, "A Real Hero", featured in Nicolas Winding Refn's universally acclaimed neo-noir film, Drive, a place in the history books is arguably already theirs. In a click-bait driven music scene, it's rare to find an album that stands the test of time, but Toronto-based synth duo Electric Youth may have managed that rare feat with their spectral, stunning debut album Innerworld. ** Yuuki Matthews - Funny Morning LP (Flannelgraph) ------------------------------------------------------------ Currently a member of The Shins, Yuuki has really been around. From his work as a member of Seldom and Crystal Skulls to his contributions both on the record and on the road for crooners like Sufjan Stevens and David Bazan. This 12" showcases the composition "Funny Morning", a remix of the song by the legendary Richard Swift, as well as two instrumental pieces, "Generations" and "Chrysanthemum (Slow)". While the music recalls the beauty of classic pieces like Eno's "Discreet Music" or Ashra's "Ocean of Tenderness", it is thoroughly modern. Let these beautiful sounds soothe your body until you feel like you're floating down the indoor lazy river of life and loving every minute of it. ** Trigger Hippy - s/t (Rounder) ------------------------------------------------------------ 'You can see this as a player's band, explains co-founder Steve Gorman, who also co-founded The Black Crowes, 'but it really is a band, in the true sense of that word.' Vocals are shared by multi-platinum singer Joan Osborne and veteran recording artist Jackie Greene. The Nashville-based quintet's debut album on Rounder Records draws on the strengths of all five, both individually and collectively, and showcases influences and inspiration from Memphis soul to rock, country and blues. One can sense The Band here, and Little Feat, some Led Zeppelin, and a tent revival. ** Yelle - Completement Fou (Kemosabe) ------------------------------------------------------------ Nearly a decade after forming in 2005, Yelle is releasing their 3rd album, Completement Fou, produced by Dr. Luke and his team. It is equally wild and wry, celebratory and melancholy, sensual and strange, forceful and full of fun. "We just do things we love," say Yelle, nee Julie Budet. Cofounder and key composer GrandMarnier (Jean-Francois Perrier) laid down the frame for each song. Then Luke and his ace team - Oliver, Cirkut, Kool Kojack, Billboard, JMIKE and MadMax - amplified what was already there. ** Electric Wizard - Time To Die (Spinefarm) ------------------------------------------------------------ After 21 years of being reality rupturing doom outliers, Electric Wizard are finally getting their dues. Their 8th album fizzes and crackles with the malevolent energy of a giant black sun blotting out the sky. The longstanding colossal yin & yang twin guitar assault of Jus Oborn and Liz Buckingham has been augmented by the temporary return of an old face, the original drummer, Mark Greening. Let the enheavyment commence. ** VA - We Are The Music Makers (Music Maker) ------------------------------------------------------------ Music Maker Relief Foundation is releasing a 2CD set to celebrate their 20th Anniversary. These tracks have bene hand selected by Tim Duffy and sequenced by Dom Flemons (Carolina Chocolate Drops). They represent the diversity and authenticity of Music Maker artists over many years. From the eloquent finger-style guitar of Etta Baker ot the raunchy amplified harmonica sounds of Jerry "Boogie" McCain to the haunting melodies of John Lee Zeigler. ** Tape & Vinyl & Print Zone ------------------------------------------------------------ Francis Bebey - Psychedelic Sanza 1982-84 2LP (Born Bad) Estrogen Highs - Hear Me On The Number Station LP (Trouble in Mind) Foxygen - and Star Power [tape] (CD/LP in 2 weeks) (Jagjaguwar) Games - Little Elise 7" (Hozac) Lee Gamble - Koch LP (Pan) Freddie Hubbard - Ready for Freddie LP (Blue Note) The Hussy - Live at WFMU [tape] Milt Jackson - Wizard of the Vibes 10" (Blue Note) Jayhawks - LP reissues (American) Talib Kweli - LP reissues (Rawkus) Liquid Diamonds - Aw Maw 7" (Hozac) Miss Destiny - House of Wax 7" (Hozac) Pointed Sticks - LP (Hozac) Rajayttajat - s/t LP (Dead Beat) Mike Rep and the Quotas - Mama Was a Schitzo 7" (Hozac) Shooting Guns - Wolfcop OST [tape] (One Way Static) Thievery Corporation - LP reissues (Eighteenth Street) Tinariwen - LP reissues (Modern Classics) Vaudou Game - Apiafo LP (Hot Casa) Frank Zappa - Apostrophe [reissue LP] (Zappa) Zero Boys - History Of [tape] (Magnetic South) VA - Hoosier Daddy: Mar-Vel & The Birth Of Indiana Rockabilly (Fantastic Voyage) VA - 80N7: Rough Trade Compilation (Rough Trade) ** Also Released This Week ------------------------------------------------------------ Herb Alpert - In the Mood (Shout) Joshua Bell - Bach (Sony) Brothers Gross - Sight and Sound CD+DVD (self) Decapitated - Blood Mantra (Nuclear Blast) Deep Purple & Friends - Celebrating Jon Lord (Eagle Rock) Melissa Etheridge - This is Me (MLM) Finch - Back to Oblivion (Razor & Tie) Flying Colors - Second Nature (Mascot) Englebert Humperdinck - Engelbert Calling (MRI) Jon Lord - Deep Purple and Friends (Eagle Rock) Oasis - (Whats the Story) Morning Glory [reissue] (Big Brother) Christopher Owens - A New Testament (Turnstile) Pine Hill Haints - The Magik Sounds of (K) Ruby Fray - Grackle (K) Joan Shelley - Electric Ursa (No Quarter) Team Spirit - Killing Time (Vice) Gerard Way - Hesitant Alien (Reprise) A Winged Victory For The Sullen - Atomos (Kranky) ** Upcoming Concerts ------------------------------------------------------------ Hey out-of-towners and home-bodies!
