Free instore performance! (https://www.facebook.com/events/1503136373259809/) On Sunday, October 26th, we welcome back to our stage LILY & MADELEINE for an all-ages show to celebrate the release of their brand new CD/LP, Fumes, out on Asthmatic Kitty at this record release performance! Joining Lil & Mad on stage will be the talented Ms Shannon Hayden. Bring the whole family. ** New Arrivals for October 7th ------------------------------------------------------------ ** Flying Lotus - You're Dead (Warp) ------------------------------------------------------------ You're Dead! is a shamanic pilgrimage into the psychedelic unknown of the infinite afterlife. A sonic, visual and metaphysical fusion of technological innovation and technical virtuosity that amounts to a transcendent, mind-expanding plasm that could only exist between our world and another. The enduring universe of Lotus' supporting cast has expanded and evolved to feature Herbie Hancock, Kendrick Lamar, Captain Murphy, Snoop Dogg, Angel Deradoorian, Thundercat, Niki Randa, alongside mindblowing original artwork by Japanese comic book artist Shintaro Kago. ** Steve Gunn - Way Out Weather (Paradise Of Bachelors) ------------------------------------------------------------ "Way Out Weather motors slowly but powerfully, like some 70s muscle-car cruising lazy coast-roads, safe in the knowledge of its own killer torque. The album title may abbreviate as a guileless "WOW", its bright melodies flickering like autumn sunlight on evening waves, but Gunn's rolling lyrics deal with darker aspects - the ill omens of climate change, society's lonesome outcasts, occluded Dylan riddles of impending apocalypse - that infuse the meander and drift of these lazy beguiling songs with a manifest chill, the dark rain clouds up ahead on that perfect summer drive that says sweet times now, bad times coming. You couldn't wish for a more fitting musical soundtrack to the rest of your 2014. 5 Stars." - MOJO. Playing at The Bishop on 10/8! ** Weezer - Everything Will Be Alright in the End (Republic) ------------------------------------------------------------ Following an intensely prolific couple years at the end of the 00s, the band chose to deliberately dial down the tempo in 2010, a move Rivers Cuomo says allowed him to write at a slower pace, giving the songs he wanted to use for an album the time to gradually grow into their final forms. He started almost every song on the piano. When it came time to record the material, Weezer reunited with Cars frontman Ric Ocasek. The resulting album is a stand-out gem in their vast and varied catalogue, a reflection of a much-loved band at their very best. Free awesome poster with purchase! ** Caribou - Our Love (Merge) ------------------------------------------------------------ You reach a point in life where the question of how to stay at the top of your game looms; the only real solution being, you change the game. Our Love, the new album from Caribou, is the sound of Dan Snaith doing just that. It is formed around a mixture of digital pop production, hip hop-inspired beats, muted house basslines, and a love of shuffling garage that can be traced all the way back to the time of Start Breaking My Heart - all of which are, of course, filtered through Dan's own unique perspective. ** SBTRKT - Wonder Where We Land (Young Turks) ------------------------------------------------------------ It was on a tidal island off Essex, that SBTRKT began the recording process, inviting a host of collaborators to join him. Throughout the night, the tapes continuously rolled, animation was projected on the walls and every creative impulse was documented. Inspired by this new open method of recording, SBTRKT visited the US armed with a wish list of collaborators to track down. It was here he worked with newcomer Raury, Ezra Koenig from Vampire Weekend, A$AP Ferg and Emily Kokal from Warpaint. ** Ex Hex - Rips (Merge) ------------------------------------------------------------ Ex Hex is a power trio from Washington, DC. Drums, bass, guitar, searing leads- this is unapologetic rock n roll spat out in the discipline's mother tongue. With Wild Flag on hiatus, Mary Timony (Autoclave, Helium) needed a new outlet, so she retreated to her basement and started writing. Mary found Laura Harris and they hit it off immediately. In walked Betsy Wright from the wilds of Virginia. Betsy is a performer and an ace piano player, and before long, she was slinging a cherry SG as the third member of Ex Hex. ** O'Death - Out Of Hands We Go (Northern Spy) ------------------------------------------------------------ O'Death convened in Maine to work with lo-fi recording guru, Caleb Mulkerin (Fire On Fire, Cerberus Shoal). The band has returned to a focus on live performances with voice and lyrics planted firmly in the center of the band's dynamic arrangements, a stark departure from the multi-tracked and meticulously overdubbed Outside. "Its raw and primal, with rippling banjo set against a crackling backdrop that doubles both as the sound of old vinyl and the campfire around which Greg Jamie's personal demons are exorcised" - Uncut ** Iceage - Plowing Into the Field of Love (Matador) ------------------------------------------------------------ Channeling the rage and emotion of their tempestuous early releases into finely honed musicianship, the new LP from the Copenhagen band features piano, mandolin, viola and organ atop razor-sharp guitars and a lolloping, synchronized rhythm section. The record has a clear, uncompressed sound, and Elias' desperate vocals are out front, nakedly accountable for the words. At the other extreme, the album tends to a sort of euphoria, and even humor. Yet desperation and loss lurks behind. This is an album about seeing, learning, and rejecting things, in a cycle that repeats and builds. ** Johnny Marr - Playland (New Voodoo) ------------------------------------------------------------ Work on the album commenced in London in spring 2014 as soon as the year of touring in support of 'The Messenger' came to a close. It finds Marr continuing the creative connection that was forged on 'The Messenger' with collaborator and co-producer Doviak, as well as the other musicians who performed on the album and accompanying tour. Last year, Johnny enjoyed a monumental start to his solo career with an abundance of critical acclaim for The Messenger including being named as NME's Godlike Genius. Free 7" with purchase. ** NehruvianDOOM - s/t (Lex) ------------------------------------------------------------ Produced by Metal Fingers and featuring MF Doom on several tracks, its a compact 9 track, 30 minute long player. Bishop Nehru's breakthrough mixtapes, released from the age of 15 saw him rhyming over Doom produced instrumentals. Doom joined the line of MCs who co-signed the young rapper including heavyweight lyricists Kendrick Lamar and Nas, who introduced him on stage during his set at SXSW as The future of music. Still only 17, Bishop has now wrapped up his debut album for Lex. ** Stevie Nicks - 24 Karat Gold - Songs From The Vault (Reprise) ------------------------------------------------------------ "Most of these songs were written between 1969 and 1987. One was written in 1994 and one in 1995. I included them because they seemed to belong to this special group. Each song is a lifetime. Each song has a soul. Each song has a purpose. Each song is a love story... They represent my life behind the scenes, the secrets, the broken hearts, the broken-hearted and the survivors." Dave Stewart and the Nashville session cats helped Nicks record 17 tracks in just three weeks. ** Peaking Lights - Cosmic Logic (Weird World) ------------------------------------------------------------ "Cosmic Logic" is a heady brew of dub, kraut, minimal house, disco and pop influence all rendered in the inimitable Peaking Lights fashion. Recorded by the band themselves in a couple of LA studios and then mixed by Matt Thornley of DFA, 'Cosmic Logic' follows the outer space pop explorations of 2012's 'Lucifer' and '936' before that. This time around, however, the band have gone for a more concise, lean approach - abandoning some of their psychedelic sprawl for a more pure pop experience. ** Macy Gray - The Way (Kobalt) ------------------------------------------------------------ Macy's impressive catalog of work is filled with highlights. She has released six studio albums, and received five Grammy Award nominations. The Way is a beautifully crafted pop and R&B masterpieces that is sure to reinforce Gray's reputation as the ground-breaking and innovative artist that she has been since day one. Features the hit 'Hands'. ** Barr Brothers - Sleeping Operator (Secret City) ------------------------------------------------------------ The 13 songs here are meditative and explosive, exploring the far reaches of folk laced with West African influences, hypnotic modernist pulsing and beyond. While the record extends into cinematic and other-worldly territories, it maintains a campfire-like intimacy throughout. The band was joined by local neighborhood guests from Arcade Fire, Patrick Watson's band, The Luyas, Bassekou Kouyate's band and Little Scream along the way. ** Dot Hacker - How's Your Process (Org) ------------------------------------------------------------ Dot Hacker's genesis comes from when Klinghoffer and bandmate Clint Walsh were touring as part of Gnarls Barkley back in 2006. Two more seasoned musicians, Eric Gardner and Jonathan Hischke soon rounded up the lineup and the band was formed in 2007. Klinghoffer's schedule became substantially busier upon joining the Red Hot Chili Peppers as a full-time member in 2009, though Dot Hacker eventually found time to release its debut "Inhibition" in 2012. "How's Your Process?" marks the 2nd of the bands 2-part sophomore effort. ** Field Report - Marigolden (Partisan) ------------------------------------------------------------ Three years after the band found themselves being championed by NPR and Rolling Stone and performing with Counting Crows and Emmylou Harris off the back of their stunning debut, Field Report has returned with a sophomore LP that is a transcendent masterpiece. The music is instantly inspiring sonically and lyrically rewarding under scrutiny. Recently, fellow songsmiths ranging from Mark Eitzel to Aimee Mann have come forth to praise his songwriting talents. Playing at The Bishop TONIGHT! ** Philip Selway - Weatherhouse (PIAS) ------------------------------------------------------------ Four years after the unexpected and exquisite treat that was Phil's debut album Familial, the man formerly known only as the drummer of Radiohead returns with his sophomore record. At 38 minutes, the album is as concise in shape as it is expansive in mood and assured in execution, mining a generally darker, fuller sound than its gentler, more acoustic-based predecessor and reflecting the band-centred nature of its construction and its creator's growth in confidence. Weatherhouse was made in collaboration with Adem Ilhan (Fridge, Adem) and Quinta. ** TV Eyes - s/t (Omnivore) ------------------------------------------------------------ Jason Falkner, Roger Joseph Manning, Jr. and Brian Reitzell have quite a musical history. Manning and Falkner, once bandmates in Jellyfish, are supervising and composing music for several films directed by Sofia Coppola, including Virgin Suicides and Lost In Translation. Currently, Reitzell composes music for the TV drama Hannibal. But, together, they are TV Eyes. Their 2006 self-titled debut was only released in Japan, now out of print, and commanding top dollar on the collector market. ** Tape & Vinyl & Print Zone ------------------------------------------------------------ Belle & Sebastian - LP reissues (Matador) Birds of America - Current Carry [tape] (Boa/Luna) Birds of America - What Was Birds: 2000-2011 [tape] (Boa/Luna) Deaf Wish - St Vincent 7" (Sub Pop) High Dive - Europe 12" (Yo Yo) High Dive - These Are Days [tape] (self) Owls - Song #9 Demo [flexi 7" (Joyful Noise) PC Worship - Social Rust LP (Dull Tools) Unicorns - Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone?
